I just got my braces tightened today, &I was instructed to wear a rubber band on the right side of my mouth only. I was wondering why do I only have to wear it on "one" side of my mouth & what is the purpose of wearing rubber bands with your braces?

All help is greatly appreciated.

I am an Orthodontist and can probably help you with this question. With out going into details, there are three kinds of bites. The ideal bite is Class I. The other bites are Class II (where you tend have the lower jaw way behind the upper) and Class III (vice versa to Class II). If your Orthodontist told you to wear RB on one side, it may be because you have Class I on one side and wither Cl II or Cl III on the other side. Wearing RBands on the effected side will correct your bite. I am sure they told you but you have to wear your rubber bands faithfully to correct the bite. If you discontinue bands because you are sore, you will net get over the soreness. Just persist through initial soreness until you get over it. Also make sure to change you rubber band when ever you eat. The bands tend to loose their strength over time and needs to be replaced at least 4-5 times a day. Hope that helps.

The rubber band will help make your bite better. Your teeth probably don't line up correctly on one side and so they gave you the rubber bands. I had two and wore them like I was told to and it made my mouth over correct itself. I was done with the rubberbands after that, and I guess I was fine since they didn't make me wear them again. I do know people who have had to wear them on oneside before.

I had to wear one band on one side of my mouth for a while, and though it looked weird, it worked. The bands are to move and conform your teeth over time. You only wear it on side because only one side needs changing. It's actually easier to wear a band on only one side because you only have to worry about one, rather than two. Wear your elastics-it makes you're teeth look ALOT better. Believe me.

Im sure they noticed, there is a few reasons for this. The most popular being that your bite is off on only one side, the rubberbands help guide yotur teeth with the bite..... it can feel odd wearing it on one side but unless directed dont change that .... good luck to you ! :::]
