I am on home use of Demerol injections, however, I am now down to 400 ml a day which is not enough to allow me to be functional. I have been up to 1000 ml a day, but on the average, if I am to function properly I need between 500 and 700 mls. I am living in great pain because the medical professionals are not comfortable but they want me to live.(in pain) Because of my chronic pain, I have tried to commit suicide several times now that I'm suppose to live with the pain. I have been through many other medications that either don't work or I have adverse reaction to; so we end up with demerol again. I know the risks and am willing to take them, so I am looking for information that would help make the doctor more comfortable with prescribing. (i.e.: such as studies of pain management with demerol)

That is a good question!! If I was you which I am in the same boat. Try asking your doctor for a drug called Methadone. This drug is a time release drug and will last all day long. If your considering staying with demerol, see a pain management clinic for your pain. Not any old doctor. They have to be certified to deal with pain management. I have been taking high doses of pain meds for over 7 years

First, for Miss Cricket, it would be greatly helpful if you actually knew what you were talking about before responding to a question. If you were the least bit familiar with chronic pain and with the management of chronic pain, your answer would be entirely different from what it was.

You do need to be able to function relatively well and on a routine basis. From what you've written, that's not what's happening now.

So, insist on a referral to a pain management clinic. This is a multi-disciplinary clinic where very health care profession specializes in pain within their own discipline. In addition, a pain specialist has at his/her disposal a number of other drugs that can help, but that most doctors wouldn't realize are a part of the pain management arsenal. As well, a pain doctor will be able to recommend other, non-drug management techniques that will help you. Every little bit helps.

Doctors are fully aware of the risks with prescribing Demerol or other pain management drugs. They are regulated by the Drug Adminstrators Agency. They have to follow the laws by which they are held responsible for when prescribing these meds. Have you tried pain blocks? I suggest you find other avenues of pain relief instead of using so much pain meds. I do not see how any one can function under these high doses of pain killers. I would be concerned with the addiction that comes along with these meds. The doctors do not want you to live in pain. They must up hold the laws when dispensing prescriptions of this nature. I would suggest epidurals and pain blocks and rehab for physical therapy and drug addiction.

For all these chronic pain patients we refer to a pain clinic for their meds....We have found over the years they end up or tend to doctor shop or over medicate with the prescribed meds. Once we refer them to a pain clinic we will no longer prescribe pain meds for them when they come to us....they are told they have to return to their pain clinic...I feel sorry for those that are in real pain, it must be rough, but on the other hand i have seen so much abuse asking for more and more......I have had neck surgery, have ruptured disc in spine, ulnar nerve surgery in elbow, plus several other surgeries....only pain meds I have taken is a darvacett when it was just a have to case....guess I just have a high tolerance to pain

Go to a pain management clinic. They are far more agressive in treating pain than are GPs and they are under less DEA scrutiny.

The doctors may be trying to detox you and wean you from these habituating narcotics,
