go to lastminute.com under restaurants. I always go there, when I need something special and cheep in central London. you can even chose your price range, and there is some pretty good deals! try Blue print cafe, where you can sit and look at the Thames

In the Soho area you will find lots of cheap restaurants to dine out if you like internatioanl food (Chinesse, Italian, Spanish, Indian, etc) Just have a look around and choose the one you prefer. I have tried La Porchetta and Tapas. But you have to go early to the last one because it gets full soon.
Holborn and Covent Garden are almost unaffordable.
Otherwise, in any Pizza Hut there is an offer these days to eat as much pizza as you want for just £4.99, or £5.99 with salad and dessert, but maybe this is not so exciting for a visitor.
You can find some good places to eat fish and chips in Covent Garden.

Jimmies next to Bar Italia on Frith Street and Old Compton Street in Soho, watch out for fixed price pre and post theatre dinners, Hogs Heads and Wetherspoons. Just watch out for specials.

At lunchtime look around the UCL Bloomsbury campus behind the British Museum and the LSE campus around Aldwych/Kingsway. There are lots of places catering to students.

Wong kei!
This is a great chinese restaurant on Wardour Street in China Town. It's cheap, the food is good but the service is outrageous!!
You might visit and find nothing out of the ordinary but the staff a little abrupt - you might visit and get to see the other guests at your table receive a comlete character assasination - it's highly eentertaining.
Anyway - it's easy to get to - inexpensive and serves nice food.

Getting a decent meal in Central London doesn’t have to cost the earth, as there’s a range of affordable eateries offering a selection of European and International cuisine.

Try Axis [map] for an eclectic mix of flavours at this ultra funky restaurant. The Axis is located within the One Aldwych hotel complex.

Eat excellent Indian cuisine at Mela [map], Shaftesbury Avenue, which is located in the heart of Central London. This award-winning restaurant is extremely popular and great value for money.

If you’re looking for a lively taste of Mexican food check out La Perla [map], Maiden Lane, which offers a great selection of discounted beers, spirits and cocktails. This restaurant is sure to liven up any evening and offers a range of Tex-Mex snacks.

Those in need of good old-fashioned pasta and pizza like mamma used to make should head to Strada [map] (Holborn) Great Queen Street, Holborn. This is the perfect venue for a large group of friends or family who can enjoy the warm hospitality of the friendly staff and the none too scary bill at the end of the evening.

Meals go with a swing at Cargo [map], Kingsland Viaduct, Rivington Street, Shoreditch, as here you’ll find a tasty menu, extensive range of wines and beers and live music on a weekly basis. Start your night in style with a visit here.

10 Cellar Gascon [map], West Smithfield, is a laid back venue serving a range of delightful small dishes of all shapes and sizes including duck and goose liver, salt cod and cold andouilette. There’s also an extensive French wine list and a wide array of armagnacs.

If you’re looking for a classier version of the traditional fish and chip dish try Fryer’s Delight [map] , Theobald Road. Chips are a speciality and cooked in beef dripping for a sweeter and meatier taste. Fish arrives in the freshest condition and there’s also huge gherkins to boot.

Dining in style doesn’t have to cost a fortune and the St John [map], St John Street, proves it. Winner of numerous awards and favoured by the fashionable you can still find some traditional and budget-friendly food including lamb and green sauce sandwich, trotter and mash, and Eccles cake and Lancashire cheese. Great for vegetarians and meat eaters alike, this restaurant is perfect for those serious about their food.
