The biggest problem when communicating with people from other nationalities and cultures is logically the use of localism in a conversation. For instance, you can be quite confortable saying to a person how "happy" you feel, yet in some countries the word used is "gay" (no disrespect intended). And depending where you are in the world, you would have problems for calling people like that.
Little things can mean so much: good and bad. In my organization we deal with people from every language, every country, every culture and often have a volunteer or two who gets into a little disturbing situation because of same or cross language communications problems.

What you DON"T say is also very important. Many cultures rely on body language as well as spoken language.
For examle, in the US, the OK sign with your fingers means OK, however, if you were to use that hand gesture in Italy, it means something similar to the words you scream at the driver who just cut you off.....
To be safe, if possible, ALWAYS research the culture you are visiting so as to be aware of their customs and so forth. There's nothing worse than a social blunder that could be easily avoided.

Do not expect someone from another country to think like an American even if they live here. Many immigrants are rejected by Americans because they look, act, and think differently. Try inviting an immigrant into your home. I have had international Thanksgivings and for some it was their first time in an American home. It also gave me an opportunity to teach them something about our great history and have close friendships all over the world.

Language and the use of words in different cultures is an interesting challenge. Being careful to make sure you understand one another is important.
