I don't know if anyone can answer this one for you without more information.

Dogs dig for different reasons.

Some times it is boredom and they need more activity to keep their minds occupied.

Is he an outside dog? bring him into the house or garage when it is raining and keep him busy. Be sure he has good shelter so he can get out of the rain.

He may be scared and digging helps to release his anxiety ...so you need to break his pattern during rains by "again bring him inside" so dirt is not available.

He may be trying to escape to get away from the rain.

And then again digging in wet dirt is a lot more fun that dry dirt he may be just entertaining himself/herself.

lots of luck, but don't punish the animal, it is doing what natural provided. I really hate to see people strike a dog for their behavior.

I cannot comment on the chow part but as a retriever owner i can assure you they like to dig.. Boredom may be playing a part in this also,, Is the dog left unnattended out in the rain for any length of time?? If so, BRING THE DOG IN!! they should not be left outside in the rain...

Someone told me this a long time ago: get some balloons and put a little bit of ammonia in it and fill it up half w/ water, of course tie the balloon up and put it in the holes outside. Wherever the dog digs and you got to watch your dog though and when the dog goes to dig, the balloon will pop and a little bit of fumes will come out and the dog will not like it and eventually will stop digging. My friend said this is harmless to the dog but you must supervise every time you do this so you can check on the dog and remove the busted balloons from the holes also. *Also give them toys, chewies, and treats.

How to Stop Your Dog From Digging Up the Lawn

Digging can be either a characteristic of your dog's breed or evidence of separation anxiety and a desire to escape.

Instructions
STEP 1: Avoid punishing your dog for digging; this only teaches her not to dig in your presence. She may resume digging when you're not around.
STEP 2: Take her on walks. Dogs often dig to expend energy, and walking is a less destructive way to accomplish this.
STEP 3: Put up a fence to keep your dog out of areas ' like your well-manicured lawn ' where you don't want her to dig.
STEP 4: Confine your dog in a dog run with toys, shade and water.
STEP 5: Keep your dog's sleeping area shaded in hot weather, and supply a wading pool if it's hot outside. Dogs often dig in search of a cool place to lie down. (In your case, your dog might actually be digging to get out of the rain, as someone else suggested!)
STEP 6: Turn on the sprinklers or spray your dog with a hose each time she starts digging ' this may discourage her from digging if she doesn't like water sprayed on her.

Tips & Warnings
Digging is often a result of boredom, so keep your dog occupied with other activities.
Give your dog her own place to dig ' a sandbox or dirt area ' and encourage digging in only that spot by hiding treats for her to find. This allows your dog to enjoy the natural behavior of digging without ruining your yard.

Don't let him out alone in the rain. That type loves to be wet so this may seem cruel to him, and a big bother to you, but I don't see much choice if you really want to prevent this. Digging in wet dirt is just too much fun.
Come on, everybody. Dogs dig because it's fun and because they can. Besides, they often are able to hear underground critters, and it's just to good to pass up.

RE: a thank you to end a canine from digging holes on your backyard? My canine has merely at present began digging up my total backyard. She has on no account completed that earlier, and now there is vast gaping holes everywhere, what do you propose I could do to make her end. I fuss at her as quickly as I seize her, yet she frequently does it while no person is around, and then while it rains, those...

I would either:

Put something over his feet or like cloth and tie it to his legs. Ofcourse the dog might just bite the cloth off. Or get those doggie shoes from internet.
Otherwise fence off a part of your garden and let him play in that part. I suggest gravel the area so he cannot dig.

Why is the dog outside for that long when it rains? Let him out to do his business and bring him right back in!!

Why would you leave a dog out in the rain? What a horrible life that dog has. I would say he's trying to get home to find a home that let's him inside when it rains!

Does he have shelter. If not that may be why he is digging a hole. Or get him a mate to keep him busy, he may be lonely.
