If the person has truly also been there, than I like to share the common experience and laugh about the funny bits...but for those who only exist to make themselves seem cooler by riding on the coat tails of my stories...well to that pitiful group I offer the following warning....People know! People know that you didn't actually spend your senior year in high school backpacking through Europe. You were never a go-go dancer in Limelight, nor were you or have you ever been a Peruvian cliff diver...You don't spear fish off the coast of Maui, nor do you spend your summers teaching English in Korea. You are a member of that sad group of people who would claim to be raped by a pair of purple moose, if the kid next to you claimed to have been raped by one...you're not fooling anyone...and when you're not looking they're laughing...and frankly they're laughing even when you are looking...

Been there, done that!
LOL.
If someone tells a story and I truly have been there and done that, I like to share that with them as a way of relating.
But, I hate people who are always trying to one-up eveyrone else. It's not the "been there, done that" people so much, it's the "been there, done that, and BETTER" people that annoy the heck out of me!

This is one of the most annoying things EVER!
I try not to let it get to me, even as annoying as it may be. The person is most likely trying to relate to you. By saying "I've done that" or "I've been there!!" they're trying to show you that you two have common experiences, and that they "get" you. It's a way of trying to garner your approval. (Granted, a very annoying one, but a way nonetheless.)

I used to live with a person like this. It did bother me sometimes, but I think that it was actually her way of trying to connect with life. Chances are they're interested in getting your attention. That's a compliment!

It's imperitive that someone make their own decisions and choices in life. Parent's are notorious for doing this to their children because they don't want them to reap the consequences that they have in the past.

Its terribly condescending and dismissive. It makes you feel as if your experience should somehow be diminished because someone else has had it happen to them. Its very inconsiderate. People who do this have no self awareness whatsoever.

Thanks for asking. I'll never use that smart-alec phrase again. You've done a public service.
