either is fine as long as it is spayed or neutered. If you have to ask this question, you are definitely not prepared to deal with an unspayed female dog for sure and an un-neutered male dog may be too aggressive. Please do some research before getting a pet.

From my research I have found that females are easier to train and more obedient. If you plan on allowing her to mate, they can become agressive and territorial after a litter, even to you. Male dogs are typically larger (I have a male) and I have heard that they do better with female owners. They will still exhibit some natural instincts after being altered so be prepared for some furniture and leg seduction (females do this too!) and maybe some territorial marking even after the castration. Please keep in mind that if your new puppy grabs hold of your leg in an attempt to hump you, DON'T GET MAD! This is not a display of his sexuality! Puppies do this, in addition to other things, to find out their rank. You should be the Alpha so just tell him "No" or "Down" to let him know that there is no need to attempt to be Alpha; that spot has already been taken.

You need to decide why you want a dog and what relationship you expect. Unless you intend to bred you need to be sure to neuter the animal wither it is a male or female, both can have health problems later if you do not.

There are some tests you can do with a puppy to see if it is going to be assertive and aggressive or a companion who defers to your wishes. If you are getting a puppy approx 8 weeks (needs to be with their mom's that long)
Handle the puppy and see if it will look you straight in the eye and refuse to let you hold it on it's back in your arms. These dogs tend to be more self-assured and harder to control. A clinging smuggler will tend to defer to your wishes and be more companionable.

Your training with the dog will help to set the tone on what kind of behavior it will exhibit.

Don't get an animal unless you are prepared for the expensive and the time investment...they deserve to have a good home. And a dog can be a 10 to 18 year investment.

hve you researched labs?? make sure you go to a reputable breeder and see both parents and make sure all health clearances are up to par (ofa/cerf etc.) temperament in dogs is about 80% genetic ( not environmental) so if you see the parents you will basically know what kind of temperament you are going to get.. I prefer SPAYED females as the size is better and they have no hidden agendas. Neutered males are fine also but they still seem to exhibit male behavior ( interested in sniffing everthing etc) what is it that you want the dog for?? hunting? obedience shows, agility , flyball etc? long runs at the beach? Remember, labs love the water and it would be a disservice if you didn't allow for him/her to participate in the activities that it was bred for. You should also ask the breeder where your local labrador retriever club is located and get involved.. you won't regret it - you can find that info from the AKC website

I would get a male, then you don't have to worry about a girl dog going in to heat and the extra load come puppy time (assuming that if you got a female, you'd breed her in the future). Also male dogs are less aggressive usually.

I prefer female dogs no matter what breed. I have two females and one male now, all different breeds. although all three are great, the females were easier to train, are more obedient, and are better with the kids. All three are spayed/neutered.
