Try saying "I don't want to talk about it." This is more direct.
If they keep asking you should just walk away. This effectively closes the conversation.

That is just people the more you tell them you don't want to talk about something the more they pry it makes them more determined and curious. They think that you are hiding something juicy and won't stop they drive you crazy and when you lash out at them it is then it will stop, I know you don't want it to reach that level so try this ignore them the message will soon be clear to them.

I think at some point you are justified to put the rude person on the spot and ask them why, since you have clearly told them you don't want to talk about the issue, they don't just drop it. "Are you mentally incompetent or just completely rude and crass?", delivered with a freezing smile, might be the way to go here.

Just ignore them at a certain point you have the right to be rude.
I cant see where an attorney would come in to play with this question. but I would change the conversation or just walk away

It would be better for you to just say "I prefer not to discuss this, thank you" then change the subject to something you want to talk about. If the person persists, then tell them, "sorry, I really must be going" then leave.

Please be patient with people.
Here's a few more things you can say: "I'd rather not talk about that."
"Let's change the subject."
"What exciting thing has happened to you lately?"
I like Shanna's advice. Just saying something like, "Let's talk later." and walking away might work well.
By the way, I'm sorry about whatever painful event it is in your past that you don't want to talk about. I'm wishing you a brighter future.

When someone tells me they don't want to talk about something I say "I understand" and drop the subject. Tell them to stop prying!

I will say "I'd rather not discuss it."
If they persist, "I really do appreciate your concern, but really, I don't want to talk about it."
If they continue to persist, I'll say "I'm fine, really." and change the subject.
Beyond that, I'll say "This conversation is over." and leave.
