Hey Want to Know,
There are a lot of sites that are world wide. Some of my research takes me to Wigtownshire and some other great Scottish sites. Here are some great world wide sites for records, chats, etc.

You can go to Register House in Edinburgh.
You can join your local genealogy society.
You can try familysearch.org (mormons) but I've never met a Scottish person who got any decent info out of them.
Best by far (cheap but not free) is:
http://www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk/
All the Scottish records are on here. I've got back to 1680 on one branch of my family using just this one site.
Good luck!

You could try www.lds.org or www.mormon.org. These are the two official websites for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and they have a ton of geneaolgy information and I believe that it is free.

Search your local phonebook for genealogy libraries. There are some entirely devoted to records of birth, death, marriage, etc.
