the pain of the tattoo is supposed to be symbolic of how much the art means to you so deal with it or dont get it.

Oh, c'mon...they aren't THAT bad.
And its not that alcohol seeps out your pores, its that it thins out your blood and often when tattooing, you bleed, so you can image how bad the situation would be under the influence.
The problem with some topical numbing creams is that it can often make the muscle tissue numb as well. While the skin and muscles are numb and relaxed, it can often effect how well the tattoo will look.
Depending on where you get the tattoo done, its bound to hurt. Places where there is little muscle or fat tend to hurt more, same goes for areas where there are lots of nerve endings. Fatty areas tend to hurt less, but everyone has a different pain tolerance, so take that into consideration as well.
The best suggestion to you is to make sure you eat a decent meal beforehand and take a few Motrin of Midol (yes, I said Midol...even for men, it does wonders for pain). Just try to relax as much as you can and breath calmly and deeply. Some people also take breaks during tattooing, so give that a try if you need a little cool down. Good luck to you (and I hope my first comment didn't seem to b*thcy)

Drinking alcohol before getting a tattoo will NOT make it seep out your pores. Alcohol thins your blood and makes you bleed more. That's why it's not recommended to drink before getting tattooed. Also, alcohol can impair judgment. A tattoo is permanent. You don't want to pick something when you're drunk that you'll hate once you sober up.
Sure, you can take Tylenol or ibuprofen before getting a tattoo, but in my opinion, if you can't take the pain, you're probably not ready to get the tattoo, anyway.
Judging by the alcohol comment, I think you've been really misinformed about tattoos, anyway. You really need to do a bit more research before even considering stepping into a tattoo parlor. Here's a link to get you started.

My daughter's friend was in real pain getting hers on her spine and the artist put a numbing cream on after he did the outline. She said it helped out so much but she was still able to feel it but not as bad. You need to ask your artist because some won't use it as others will. However, plan wisely on what part of your body your getting it and that will also factor in. Closer to a bone & thinner flesh will be more painful than other locations. Not to mention your pain threshold.
I have 12 so far at different locations. Some hurt & some I fell asleep during it. If the artist is good they will talk/converse w/you if you don't bring somebody to chat with during the work. Just observe the person you want while their working on somebody else to see how they correspond with their client. It should be a comfortable, relaxing process for you.

it's not true that you can't drink alcohol. and it is especially untrue that it will seep out of your pores and ruin the tattoo. many people have gotten drunken tattoos. but why do you want to minimize the pain? it's really not that bad. there are worse pains for sure. if you can't take the pain then don't get tattooed.

get it somewhere you have a lot of 'fatty' tissue. For Example: don't get a tattoo on your toes, where there is little tissue (b/c i can tell u from exp that it hurts like nothing else) or if you get an armband, don't have it connect behind your arm. That's helped a few of my friends in picking where to get them so they hurt less. You can try to take a few tylenol or something before hand too i guess. I got one done while I was tipsy and it didn't distort the tatt, it just bled a whole lot more than it should have. oops.

U can find something to take your mind off the pain while you are getting the tat but there is not much you can do to minimize the pain of the tat while it is healing. depending on where on your body you are wanting the tat, you can bring a book or a magazine and try to read why he is working. Or you can bring some friends to talk to you and help distract you. Anything you can find to keep your mind off what is going on will help. Good Luck, depending on the size of your tat the pain will likely only last one hour or so, and in the grand skeme of your life, what is one hour? :)

Take 1000mg of tylenol or ibruprofen...about an hour before. It will help dull the pain, but you'll still have pain unfortunately. And I agree with one of the other answers....it depends on the body part. Areas with more fat hurt much less, I've heard the rib area and on your feet are the worse!

getting one in about 3 weeks....realistically, I would not take anything just to be on the safe side. Especially because you don't know how your body reacts to other medicines as well. I've read that Tylenol is ok but you don't want to run the chance of taking it and have excessive bleeding (not supposed to hapen with tylenol). You don't want anything to ruin your ink and so i would just take it naturally....focus on something and breathe deeply and slowly. best of luck!

don't be a wimp. they don't hurt that much. to minimize the pain get the tattoo on a part of your body with a lot of muscle, tattoos hurt most on bone and fatty surfaces, but not as much on muscle
