I can tell you which ones not to buy:
Zenith, Curtis Mathis, Curtis, Westinghouse, Pryme

For reliability, these brands are the best (according to Consumer Reports):
JVC, Sanyo, Sharp, Toshiba, Sony
Worst reliablility:
RCA (the worst), Zenith (just about as bad as RCA), Philips, Panasonic, Samsung (borderline)

I suggest you go to your local library and find the Consumer Reports issue rating the type of TV's you're interested in getting to see what's the best quality picture for the best value. Of course if you want the best of the best, get a 1080p HDTV and run HDMI cables to everything like a BluRay DVD drive and your HD satellite receiver. It all depends how much you want to spend, but you're starting at the right place by getting a good TV.

Samsung and Sony are industry leaders in quality and reliability. I have two Samsung 50" HDTVs and I have had absolutely not problems with either one and the picture quality is great. The only drawback to the Samsung and Sony products is that they are more expensive than a number of others. Also remember that the quality that you will get from the TV is only as good as the input. If you want to watch DVDs at the highest quality make sure that your are using a HDMI cable.
