The best thing you can do is eat better and drink lots of water. That makes a HUGE difference. Wash your face with a facial cleanser (I use neutrogena daily face wash) and follow up with a gentle moisturizer (I use aveeno ultra calming). Also, don't scrub your face hard with a washcloth or use facial scrubs.
I used to have moderate acne and tried every OTC treatment out there. It would help for a time, but never took it completely away, until I started doing what I just mentioned. My skin looks and feels better now than it ever did, even when using the pricey acne treatments.

I have an acne treatment that has won me the best answer better then fifteen times. Often, the person who voted it the best answer was amazed at how well it worked, even those who had severe cases of acne. I'll copy and paste it below.
Use a hot compress on it, and then use cool water to close the pores. Do the process over and over again, about five or six times. Use soap to wash the area, and then treat it with an alcohol soaked cotton ball. It should be gone within five to six hours.
Here are some of the previous comments I got from those who voted it as the best answer,

Home remedy? Gently washing of the face several times a day with soap and water is the best thing one can do with 'home ingredients'..
Acne is a distinct disease, different than just having a few pimples. See your doctor for true acne treatments. Many times you will require an antibiotic for true acne.

Drink lots of water, this will flush out your system, and help keep them away.
Wash your face twice a day with a face wash, NOT regular soap.
You can use a little lemon juice on the area, or tea tree oil.
I have been using a bunch of products from a company called Origins, (origins.com) they really work because they use natural ingredients, and they have many products specifically for people with 'problem' skin. My skin hasn't looked this good in years!
Good Luck!

Lemons. No joke... it might feel funny, and look funny if people watch you rubbing lemons on your face, but that's what i did and it works really good.
Lemons are great. They also help you look younger, and you can prove this with a simple experiment. Cut an apple in half, and on the face of one half, squeeze lemon juice on it, and leave the other half alone. See which face rotts faster, the one with the lemon can lasts 3 times as long as the one without the lemon.
