make sure he knows sit and down first. The place him in sit and put your had (palm) infront of his face and say "stay" then walk away and if he follows you say "NO" and put him back in sit and tell him (with your hand up) "stay". He will only stay for about 5 seconds the first time. Each time make him stay a little longer. For me this was the easiest command to teach next to sit!

1. Never punish the dog....he does not understand. He only knows that the hand who loves him just hit him.

2. Use reward or the clicker and rewards, hand signals are great (even deaf dogs will learn to respond to hand signals) and lots of praise.

3 Start with sit, down and easy things. so he gets the idea you are trying to communicate with him. He will learn your language before you learn "dog"

4 Then start with very short stays...move away very short distances and reward him with treats and praise. Increase the length of the stay and the distance of the stay. This could take a while.

Note: (I have mixed emotions about the treats, my dog, decided that without the treats he wasn't going to perform at all....so I should have used praise only with him...when I ask him to do something he looks to see if I have a treat in my hand and decides for himself whether it's worth the effort)

5. Don't work so long at a time so the dog get bored.

6 And remember he is a thinking creature not a robot, so make it worth his while to want to work with you. He wants to be your friend so be a friend.

7. My 6 week old healer took about a week to learn sit, down, hi-five, shake and never has learned "stay" not in his vocabulary. But he is a joy

It's very easy really:

Simply put your dog on lead in your home. Put the dog in sit position then slowly walk away with hand held out in front of you palm up. Say stay, everytime your dog gets up to follow put back in sit position and say stay then walk away again. When you reach end of your lead say stay again wait ten seconds then say come and give treat. Repeat until dog gets it.

S C is right on track, but don't forget to reward your dog when he does what completes a command. Dogs need to work for food and they learn by rewards.

Try your local pet store. They generally have a list of obedience classes that are up and coming.
