okcupid.com is a good site. I met my current boyfriend there and we have been together for over a year and are very happy. I know a lot of people use it for short-term or one-night stand types of relationships, but it doesn't have to be that way. There are a lot of fun things to do at the site and dating isn't the primary function of the site, so that is what keeps it free.

You can really learn a lot about some of the users, but it depends on how much the user chooses to put about themselves. Another nice feature is that it gives a rating for how closely it thinks you would match as firends and as a relationship. Plus, the interal to the site IM format is nice because you can see users who are active on the site at that time.
