The correct answer is yes you can get caught for illegally downloading music and such. The bigger issue is that in most cases people do not get prosecuted unless they have major infractions or are some member of society that would make a good example of.

Its like speeding. You know you are braking the law but the chances of getting caught are really low. So we continue to do it until one day we get caught. Then we slow down for a week or so until we see that we are not getting caught again. Then we proceed to speed again.

File sharing is not illegal, but sharing or copying copy righted material without the authors / owners consent is.

If you are only an occasional downloader / uploader you are unlikely to be approached, but if you are a big time downloader or you regularly upload torrents or rips of DVDs, then the owners or lobbying bodies might take notice of you, and request legal action to be brought against you.

If its your first offense you will likely just be given a fine, however you may also have your computer equipment that has been used for the sharing of the material confiscated.

If your a bigger fish, I'd expect prison time, lengths of sentences and rates of fines, will likely vary to a large degree depending on where you live, and on the material itself.

Yes, absolutely you can be caught.

Will you be caught? Unlikely.

The consequence? Usually a suit against you by the RIAA, but those haven't gotten very far, and sometimes the cases have gotten sponsorship, or free counsel. Anyway, use at your own risk.

Possibly, it depends on whether you're unlucky enough to get caught by the copyright owners. Fines *can* be enormous. It's best to get music/movies from legitimate sources.

Personally, i wouldn't use a programme such as limewire.
I like doing things the legal way.
But i've heard it causes spyware and stuff, not sure if you can get fined or anything.

Death by hanging.

Yes. But you are more likely to get caught or in trouble for letting others get music from you more so than getting music from others
