Do your homework. Check out all of the airline sites, Orbitz, etc, call a travel agent if you have to. Comparative shopping is always the way to go. As the first answer stated, try to book as far in advance as you possibly can.

Last minute stand-by flights offered at a discount by the airline. They are the least reliable but the cheapest by far!
You won't always get what or when you want though... It is however a great way for a student or a traveller to go. Someone with no time restrictions and a lot of patience and a sense of adventure...

There is no single place to get the cheapest flight every time. The best thing to do is look at several websites, call a travel agent and compare prices. You can get low fares, but not always from the same place.

The most reliable way is to book a very very long way in advance. Not always possible, but never fails with the budget airlines.
