Relationships cause stress. Sometimes when hurt feelings are involved its harder to communicate. Its easier to communicate when we step outside the relationship in order to assess it.
I have found that sometimes taking a break from a relationship is a good idea.
It sounds like in your case your boyfriend is more of a friend to you though. There is nothing wrong with keeping him as a friend as long as you both agree on that.

I had two friends like this once. They have one out several times, and they usually talk more when they AREN'T going out. I think it's just because they're meant to be just friends. So maybe you and your boyfriend are meant to be just friends, or maybe you're both shy.

Maybe he was nervous about having a girlfriend, and couldn't talk to you as a girlfriend. But he feels more comfortable with you as friends so can open up to you more.

Because you are not a good match as a romantic couple, but as friends. Take the hint and keep it that way.

Maybe you make better friends than lovers. The relationship does not have any commitments.
