I can buy scampi from my local market. It looks like a prawn, but it's body is straight, unlike a prawn which is curved. Search to see if there is a fish wholesale close to you that will sell to the public. Mine does, but I,m in Germany! I have also bought fresh whole scampi in Sardinia. I once had scampi "Oscar Wilde" at a hotel in Devon. Scampi in a sauce, but with no breadcrumbs. Good luck.

Scampi is the sauce the shrimp, chicken, tuna, etc are dressed in for service on pasta (usually fettuccine but you can use what you like). This sauce will cover approx 4 chicken breasts, 2 lbs small shrimp peeled and deveined (40 count) or 1 lb large shrimp (12-16 count).
Basic Scampi
INGREDIENTS
1/2 cup butter
1/4 cup olive oil
1 teaspoon dried parsley
1 teaspoon dried basil
1/4 teaspoon dried oregano
3 cloves garlic, minced
3/4 teaspoon salt
1 tablespoon lemon juice
In a skillet heat the butter or margarine and oil over medium high until the butter/margarine melts. Add the parsley, basil, oregano and garlic and salt and mix together in the skillet. Stir in lemon juice.

Scampi is shrimp in a lemon, garlic, butter and parsely sauce.
I haven't seen it battered or in breadcrumbs.
I'm confused aren't prawns another name for shrimp? If you hate prawns you won't like shrimp scampi.

Oh, dear, around here, scampi is shrimp served in butter flavored with garlic, ala Red Lobster. I love it. I buy the shrimp frozen, raw, and unbreaded for home use.
I have been served shrimp scampi that is in a cream sauce, with garlic in it. I prefer the little shrimpies swimming in butter sauce.

Scampi used to be monkfish that was cut up small and then fried in breadcrumbs. Now monkfish is an expensive product and it is now large prawns instead.

octopi? anyway, scampi is seafood...
Go get it fresh, offer it to a REALLY hot pan containing virgin olive oil and drop it in. 2 seconds, maybe three.
TAKE IT OUT!!! It is SO cooked...
I should point out that I can't eat shellfish. Or even seafood. However, fish, I can crush into a burger, or into a sandwich. Shark is OK too.
