This is for a university project, I would just like people's views on whether mainstream religions are suitable belief systems for the 21st century? I would like to know what you think is wrong about these religions? Thank you for your help

Try "The End Of Faith" by Sam Harris and "The God Delusion" by Richard Dawkins. Your local library should have them both, and they both deal with the role of old religions in modern society.

The mainstream religions have problems for many reasons, they force dogma onto their followers - dogma that is centuries out of date, because of these dogma the religions can not evolve for modern life, their leaders like to get involved with political matters or other matters that do not concern their faith. You can see this in many newspapers when they give their eccleisiastical comments on things. The religions have also been corrupted by individuals that use them for their own gain.

I live in a mainly Christian country and although I am not a Christian I find that Christianity seems more tolerant of other religions than any other. But within the Christian religion we find intolerance, the Catholics hate Jehovah's Witness and vice versa and the Huguenots hate everybody.

I'd say intolerance is the main problem with the major religions.

Think about it, if you believed that your religion guaranteed your acceptance into your particular heaven you dare not admit that any other religion might be better than your own otherwise you would question your faith. Each religion's leaders would not tolerate that, hence intolerance.

This requires a lot of time and discussion but I think one of the main problems with religions these days is that people claim to profess a religion but then do not follow its commandments. They do not apply their religions in their lives. This has created a lot of problems and confusion. Many people also use the name of religion to achieve their own ulterior objectives. These objectives may be against the very tenets of the religion concerned.

The main problems are because they have lost much of the Light and Sound; the twin aspects of the Holy Spirit. The priestcraft and clergy have held their flock under bondage to dogma that teaches little about the Audible Life stream.

i've also been researching this kind of stuff for uni. i'm not religious but it totally fascinates me.
as far as i can see people are opposed to religions because they a)like to think they are above all that, not ones to conform, not needing the guidance or structure and b)associate religion with war and conflict. but the thing is, people need war. if there were no religion people would find other things to fight about. plus, nobody's above that need for community, structure, approval, hope...etc and just find it in other places instead. the sad thing is nowadays the new religion, although unlabelled, is the one of Fear. threats of "terrorism",that id cards are necessary, that unjustified imprisonment and torture is ok.... it's crazy. we now have a new collective belief system that has us killing innocent iraqi children in the name of global safety.

think about it.

Religions have been controled and polluted by those in power for political and personal power. For instance I have received shaktipat (Baptized in spirit) from swami muktananda paramahamsa and studied siddha yoga. I know Jesus taught the same truth the same way. It appears to me that christianity, buddhism, and islam have their roots in the vedas, siddha yoga, vedanta philosophy and hinduism. If i am aware of these things, surely the pope and others know it. why is this information still hidden from the masses?? The powers that be truely love having their sheep. True teachers of God set you free. For ages siddha yoga was passed from one guru to another until muktananda was told to make it public. Jesus without doubt was taught by such a siddha guru. I think the main problem is the problem that has faced religion for thousands of years: There is no god.

Sectarian conflict - the worst religious problem ever.
