I wouldn't worry too much yet. It's not really been all that long.
Try cough drops for some temporary relief. You should be able to buy a bag of them for less than $2.
Also, I find that taking a long, hot-as-you-can-stand shower can help too.
If you smoke anything at all, stop for a while.
Hope these at least give you some ideas!

If the cough is getting worse as in coughing up phlem, that's a good thing it means your lungs are clearing. If it's just getting deeper and nastier and nothing is coming up, see if you can find an nurse or someone who can advise you depending on the type of cough. It can take a really long time for a cough to go away. I got sick a few years ago and it took a full six months for my cough to completely clear up, I'm not a smoker, am generally very healthy and live in an area with really clean air.
As for home made remedies...try steaming...fill your wash basin with very hot water, drape a towel over your head and the basin and breath deeply for as long as you can. This can help steam stuff loose. Take your vitamins, drink lots of water, eat healthy and get moderate exersize. Don't push youself and let your body heal.

A chronic or persistant cough is one of the first signs of lung cancer, a good chance that is not the problem, it could just be an allergic reaction to something new, inside or out, or even food, pet, etc., but, better to be safe than sorry, get into the Doc and have a chest x-ray and some bloodwork and more than likely you will be fine. Some viruses can leave you with an irritating hackey cough for months after you are over them too.

Major cities have health clinics for people like you who do not have health insurance. You should go and get a shot before it get worst. There are many medications at the drug store, but which one is the right one for you.
I would look on the internet for the county health clinic for your city. Also look for the free clinics in your area, county hospital walk-in clinics.
There is a very bad flu that is going around the world. I had a flu shot for the second time in my life two weeks ago. Now I have the flu, and the doctor said if I did not get the shot it would have been worst.

If the cough is producing mucus, then an expectorant like Mucinex helps.
If the cough is a dry cough caused by irritation, a couple of things you can do is to increase the humidity in your house by using a vaporizer - especially in the bedroom, and if the irritation is caused by allergies, then an anti-histamine like Claratin might help.
