jay walking is when you cross a street illegally, not crossing at an intersection, so in the middle of a street. crazy term but it's a common term....from a canadian.

Jay walking is crossing the road when the pedestrian signal is showing Red. As far as I know it is an offence in the USA. A similar law also applies in Germany, where you can be fined for crossing the road if the pedestrian crossing signal is showing Red.

Jay-Walking is actually illegal in the UK as well. It means crossing the road at the lights when there's a 'red man' as in you dont have permission. Obviously no one pays attention and Im sure you'll never get a fine for it! So Jay-Walk away!

Yes, its illegal in major cities like NY City and Los Angeles. In NYC its rarely enforced. It refers to crossing the street NOT at an intersection, or crossing against the light (red light) or crossing the street diagonally at an intersection.

Walking onto the public highway without paying due care and attention is an offence in the United Kingdom - but it is rarely, if ever, prosecuted.
