I wouldn't think that it was pure profit at all. Good grief, they have to pay for the facility, the chair, the equipment, the ink, the liability insurance, the electricity, the sterilization equipment and I am sure there are many other costs. The person who made that statement must be delusional.

As a piercer, I can assure you that most of the money I get isn't profit. It evens out to be around 40% profit from what I charge. Talking with my coworkers about what they get as tattoo artists, they don't get much more than me.

Tips are essential to make a good living off of those careers...why do you think you tip waiters and waitresses? They don't make a fortune hourly, neither do most tattoo artists and piercers. They did you a service just as we did, so why do people think its not okay to tip?

I dont think they get 100% of the profit, like the others say there are many expenses included in tattooing, but I do definately think they make a pretty good living. My opinion only of course I dont know this for a fact or anything.

In some cases Like the more popular artist who can and do charge $200 to $500 an hour, maybe.....

But otherwise tattooers deserve the income they make, not just anyone can tattoo, it take honest talent, patience, and dedication.
Tattooers also have alot of expenditures that people dont realize, tattooing ain't cheap, by any means, especially if your a very clean artist.

At my shop, all artists get 50 commission, piercers and tattoo artists. So on a 100$ tattoo, they get 50$ before taxes. And yes, we get 1099'ed at the end of the year.

not at all. most tattooers have to pay rent on their space which can vary depending on the location and size of the shop. they have to buy needles, ink, saran wrap, green soap, A+D ointment, ink caps, sterile sheets to set up on, paper towels to wipe down the tattoo. all of this comes into play when tattooing. i don't know how much money is actually profit but their art is worth the money. atleast my artists art is worth the money.
