SOME churches DO in fact tell people that the BIBLE is fiction and that it is MEANT to be a metaphorical guide to live your life, not as an account of events that actually happened.
That makes a lot of sense really.

Some of the Bible is historical fact, verifiable from other sources. For example, the fact of a census having been taken around the time of Jesus' birth is documented through other, non-Biblical sources. We do know that the Bible was written by humans, with the exception of the 10 Commandments from the Old Testament, which were said to have been inscribed in stone by the hand of God himself.
Many scholars, including many Biblical scholars, consider parts of the Bible to be allegorical, or stories intended to teach a philosophy or lesson. As such, they may be representative truth or fiction, depending upon your point of view.
Many consider parts of the Bible that depict such things as the great flood, the parting of the Red Sea, and the immaculate conception to be fiction or even, possibly, fantasy. You'd have to examine your own faith to determine how you feel about that.

The bible is a collection of stories from ancient Hebrew theologists and early Christian leaders. Most of the stories are renditions of ancient explanations for various things that could not be explained at the time. Some are a means of controlling the masses, and others are tales to amuse and keep the children in line. As with all stories and myths, each has a basis in fact and each has its use of fanciful literary licenses. However, one must always understand that the interpretation of any ancient text was made by those in power at the time. Because of this the text was usually perverted or diverted into a means of control. In answer to your question, yes I believe the bible to be a work of fiction and to a good extent fantasy as well. It does however have some basis in historical fact, and as with all good books may have some good philosophical and sociological advice.

It is both... The bible is a fictional work of an ancient man who loves fantasy stories..
Here's some idea..
Main aim of the novel(bible):to get as many idiots to believe that the main character (god) exist..
Author:Jesus Christ..
Thought of the author upon writing the novel="hmm, i onder if this work of mine will last in centuries to come... Let's see.. Ok, I'll make up a character that seems so powerful that everyone will worship.. Eh? No! That's not good enough.. I should include myself in the story!! Yes!!! They will worship me.. The author of this book.. hahaha!!! Those fools will never know what hit them"
-centuries passed-
people and believers="praise the lord!"
*somewhere in another dimension, jesus is having a party with all those other beings*
Jesus:Hey, Lucifer, look, remember that book I told you I wrote? The one that I included your name?
Lucifer:Of course.. I told you I wanted o be the bad guy.. The fallen one..
Jesus:Well guess what? Thousands of years had passed since that day I wrote that book and look..
*jesus shows lucifer those idiot who were praising the 'lord'*
Lucifer:hahaha!!! you did it!! You fooled them...
Jesus:yea, i did!! Wow!! This calls for a celebration.. Call the others!
Lucifer:Hey!! Behemoth! Leviathan! Jesus' book is a top bestseller... Let's have a party..
Jesus:Bring on the girls!!!

I believe the bible was Gods communication to a people of a certain time in history and because humanity grew from this level of awareness and now much contained within it does not apply to this age, just as paganism does not apply now. Because of the great work done by those Saints who have gone before, we have a much easier path to God. Also it has been polluted with politics and personal opinions of powers that be. See www.stephen-knapp.com/articles_to_read. this is an unbiased, factual site giving the roots of Christianity, buddhism, and islam.

Really if you read the O.T. it just seems like a lot of good advice things, like stay away from lepers, don't sleep with your family, don't eat bugs. I think someone (Moses?) just figured that if he said God said all this people would listen.
Chris Rock had this bit in his stand up on pork (not an exact quote, from my memory):
"Now I aint s****ing on anyone's religion, but something tells me on my judgement day i'm not going to hell because of what i ate. I was thinking thousands of years ago, before there was preservatives, before there was saran wrap, before there was refridgators, a pork chop might kill you. So they were like, how can we get people to stop eating pork, uhhhh say god said it was bad."
It's funnier when he does it, but you get the hint.
As for the N.T. I think it's either just an exaggeration of a good rabbi, or he had as bit of a god complex, cause it seems like Jesus was even himself a little unsure if he was God or not.

It's real easy to find out:
Pick it up and read it for yourself.
Caution: The words you read may reach deep into your soul, and you may, for the first time in your life, actually find God! So, put on that safety belt, draw yourself a stiff drink of cocoa, and settle down into learning about developing a personal relationship with the Supreme Creator of the Universe!

It is a story based on events that happened.
It has been rewritten many times. Religious sects have taken the original ideas and changed them to control the masses and benefit their ideas.
Its like a movie....the sequel is never as good as the original.

I'm gonna go with Fiction. A few minor archeological finds have substatiated some portions of the old testament. This is meaningless though, ultimately, as it would not make a Tom Clancy novel 100% true either if he incorporated some modern political or military facts in a novel.
