If your not going to enlarge photos more than say 5X7 a 4 megapixel camera would be just fine and even some 4 MP camera can make an excellent 8X10 enlargement. Brands to look at are Sony, Fugifilm, Nikon and Canon. You may want a lot of zoom. Zooms usually range from 3X optical zoom to 12X. Usually the more zoom the more you pay. Some cameras come with a battery charger. There are cameras that eat up batteries moe than others. Go to local library and look at Nov'06 Consumer
Reports. Don't be stingy with memory card you must buy. Buy MORE memory than you think you may need. My first digital camera that I bought 2 months ago .With it I bought a 2 GB memory. Hope this helps a little. One last thing, you might try a Website that reviews cameras.... dpreview.com I very much agree with sd6techme The Canon S3 S is an excellent camera, plenty of megapixels and plenty zoom, so is Canon S2 IS, and also my camera Sony Cybershot DSC-H2. All 3 enough megapixels and plenty of zoom.

There are several things you have to see..

For example the use you are going to have with the camara.. if you are a beginner or if you want only want the camera to take picture form parties, vacations, or nothing professional.

Other thing is if you want to print them, you must have a very realiable pixel capacity and digital zoom.

Price is other factor to consider, if you are new with digital camaras, do not invest more than 200 dolars in buying a new one.

My brother just wanted to buy a camera and he is a newbie in Digital Cameras, so I recomended him the Sony Cybershot DSC-S500 he got his camera from walmart for 149.99 plus tax..

He got some extra accesories, like an extra memory card, a batery charger and a carrying case and he spent like 216 at the end.

Mega Pixels is definitely something to look for. The more the better, but unless you are enlarging your pictures to more than 8X10, you probably won't be able to tell the difference in quality between a 3 Mega Pixel camera and a 5 Mega Pixel one. Also decide what overall size of camera you want. I have a Canon Digital Elph and it's small enough to fit in my pocket which makes it very easy to carry.

If you just want to snap and share pics, go for ease of use, like Kodak easy share. I'd recommend getting batteries you can recharge, too, and get a card with tons of space - you'll never regret having too much room to store pictures. Some cameras are more difficult but have settings built in to adjust for light, subject, etc - so you'll have to know your camera, but not necessarily photography - some Canons are good for this. Go to sites where people have written reviews, too. And, if you're into photography and making the adjustments yourself, go for a SLR/digital combo or others like this where you can manually change "shutter speed" and aperture. I've heard good things about Canons and Nikons. Good luck!

if your just going to post the pics on the internet or make small prints all you really need is a 5 to 6 mega pixel camera anything more is just for the retailer to get your money. But if your going to make bigger prints then your going to need more mega pixels. Go with Cannon they are a good brand. Also be sure it has a least 3 times zoom.

True it does depend on your useage, but the general things to look for are how many mega pixels it has and what type of storage it has and how many photos it can store, if it's expandable, etc. More mega pixels you have the better the quality and the more options it has to customise it is even better if you know your stuff in photography.
