i took a cab to destination A. it cost $8.70
on the way back i took a cab also. its cost $10.20 + midnight charge = $11+.
as i was talking with my sister in the back of the cab, i did not look at the route the cab driver was taking. only at the last minute when he took a turn for the senic route did i realized he was taking a longer route. at the end i only gave him $10 had a big arguement with him threatening to call the cops etc etc.
did i do wrong ? or did the cab driver deserve it ?

Yes, he probably knew the correct way, but no, you didn't clarify. He should have been more honest, but seriously, you were angry enough over this one dollar to hold this grudge long enough to post it online. That is much too long. He did legitimately use the extra gas and time, and it would have caused a lot less high blood pressure if you had just given him the extra dollar and remembered this lesson for the next time.

I've had cab drivers do that to me too.

They KNOW the streets, so it's not like they don't know what they are doing.

What you need to do is know the route and tell them how you want to get where you are going straight away, so they know that YOU know if they are screwing you.

I think you ought to pay what the cab driver demanded. It was your responsibility, legally, to tell him not to take the longest way.
But I do admire what you did!! It might make him think twice before cheating other people!

He deserved it.
Good on you.
