Here is the one and only way to make porridge. Use one measure of Sainsbury's oats (in the blue top packets). A measure can be 1 cup or half a cup. Add to them in a mixing bowl 1 measure of milk (skimmed or semi skimmed for healthy eating though full cream would be great) then add 2 measures of water. If you wish you can use all milk. Put into Microwave for 5 minutes for the full cup measures and half that for the half cup measures. Then stir and add in either of the following. Half a sliced banana or 1 teaspoon full of honey. Without either of these grate in some nutmeg. Then cook for a further 2 minutes in the microwave. When ready leave to cool for 5 to 10 minutes and eat. The processed oats such as Quaker, ready brek, Scott's etc are not as good and cost twice as much. I have porridge every day and sometimes for lunch and it is wonderful. Only Sainsbury's oats are the best. I have tried them all. This has made me feel hungry so I am just off to make myself some.

What the devil is treacle?

Mom always made us porridge in the winter. Her basic recipe was four parts milk to 1-2 parts white cornmeal. You can make it with yellow cornmeal as well, but the white cornmeal has a milder taste.

Scald but DO NOT BOIL 2 cups milk in a heavy saucepan (scalded milk has little bubbles just forming around the edge of the pan and is hot to the touch). Gradually add 1/2 cup white cornmeal, stirring constantly. It's really important to add the cornmeal slowly and stir constantly, especially if your pan isn't non-stick. I've scorched more than one pot of porridge, and believe me...it's disgusting. Slowly add more cornmeal until the porridge reaches desired thickness (keep in mind, it will thicken as it cools).
Our family is huge, so Mom would make it with a gallon of milk.
It's good with butter, sugar, and raisins. My six little brothers like to eat it with butter and syrup.
To make it even more cost-effective, make it with half-water, half-milk.

Hope that helps!

I agree with Mas, Scotts are really good. Pour milk over the porridge like you would with normal cereal and put it the microwave on full for two minutes. take it out, stir it a bit and add some more milk if it looks dry. Put it in the microwave for another minute but this time on medium.

Personally, I like it best with a spoonful of jam.

Porridge oats are porridge oats regardless of the brand. A lot of people say they like it with salt added, but I really don't fancy that. Personally I just go for semi-skimmed milk and then a spoonful of sugar stirred through it. Delish!

Failing that, have you tired things like Ready Brek?

Ok, one cup of porridge, add one cup of water and one cup of milk, simmer and stir. Will take around 7 mins to cook, then add some sugar and stir in and a bit of cold milk its lovely and fills you up for the whole morning.

I love porridge! I like it two ways, with a bit of brown sugar and milk or a daub of butter and salt. Quaker Oats usually.

Use Scotts Porridge oats, and make it with milk rather than water, it comes out more creamier, then sprinkle with sugar or drizzle maple syrup on it. Mmmmmmmmmm lovely.

Use a finely chopped make - tescos do a good one. Then use semi skim/whole milk, microwave it on high till its done, but make sure its not over done - I like it quite creamy, nothing worst than dried up porridge! Then you can add whatever you like to it. i.e honey, dried fruit, jam etc

Enjoy!

Ugh! There's no such thing as nice porridge. But if you make it with apple juice instead of water it's almost edible. That's the only way I can stomach it anyway.
