force them to give up licenses?

I saw an old lady (looked about 90) behind the wheel of a minivan turning left against the light and almost hitting several cars and pedestrians in the crosswalk.

Some very interesing answers here, if you are going to test eldery every year then might it be wise to test everyone every year? Could you live properly without driving? Why not help the situation and Volunteer to drive the elderly yourselves.?I do.

I agree, I think mandatory testing every couple years after retirement should be implemented.

I know this sounds like a hassle to many elders, but I have seen my 80 y/o grandmother drive down the wrong side of the road more than 3 times now.

We all think it's time for her to give her license up, but she disagrees. She has caused 2 accidents in the last 3 years.

I hate to take away their independence but it is a dangerous situation. I think that the DMV should shorten the renewal time and always do a road test. Possibly have them renew once a year or even every 6 months. It would help if their families got more involved also.

I think at some point the DMV should do an awareness and reaction test on the grandparents.

My friend lost his Grandfather in a very bad and stupidly tragic way, he backed into a lake at the parking lot at the doctors.
Sad thing is that my friend went with his grandfather to teh DMV and helped him memorize the different Eye test charts before his test....

I was nearly run down on my bike by a 17 yr old twinkie on a cell phone when she ran a red light. Your point?

Stats show that older drivers are safer than the younges drivers, so perhaps you are asking the wrong question.

Did you report it?
That's what needs to happen.
Uphold the existing laws instead of trying to create new ones.
She should lose her license for inability to drive, not age.

I think they should be tested ever year to make sure that they are safe to be driving.

I think after age 65, everyone should be required to DEMONSTRATE their driving ability yearly.
