We were looking for a dog. Not a "mutt" or a purebred, but a dog that worked well for my families lifestyle. Shedding, intelligence and size were major factors. We researched breeds, breeders and health risks. We ended up with a multi-generation labradoodle female. Yes we paid more then I thought we would. But here is what we have after three months. One helluva dog!

Our Labradoodle will be medium size (45-55 lbs). She has a wavy black coat, most likely will not shed much. 90% potty trained in two weeks. 7 commands after three weeks. Is so laid back I thought maybe I made the wrong choice. Extremely loving, smart, low shedder and loves the water and the kids. No excessive nipping, barking or chewing. Loyal to a fault! What a "Mutt"

And as far as purebreds being "better" then mix breeds?
Read below and give me your thoughts. More health issues it seems

Great!!!The only people making fun of mixed breeds are AKC Breeders who have preached and preached about "IMPROVING" the breed. They have been brain washed by the AKC and enjoy paying for their BMW's and Mansions on the hill. How stupid can people be to think theirs is the only way.It never occured to them that if you take a great breed and a great breed and compare the pro and cons of each Breed that such a wonderful baby could be created!!!THEY DON'T CARE!!!They hide behind the "Purebreed"Pure money!!!Now they have tagged these adorable babies "Desighner"Dogs well guess what they are wonderful babies. With the best of both worlds. The best genes from two different kinds of dogs. And what eats the Breeders up is that they are worth a Million Dollars.I raise Chiapoms mom is a Chihuahua and dad is a tiny, tiny POMERANIAN and they are fabulous I have a waiting list. They are Tiny, ears stand up,they have short soft hair ,that doesn't shed.Hopefully they will live longer, since the Pom can live to be 25 yrs old. They are registered with CKC and are fabulous babies.Too Bad AKC missed out on that money.I have babies that are AKC,CKC and other type registations. But I am my own judge about my Chiapoms. And they are CKC.I keep extensive paperwork and I do no line-breeding or in breeding that is where the problems are coming from and AKC can not asure anyone that doesn't happen reguardless of what they proclaim.A good Breeder makes his or her own name.I am so proud you have the best of the best!!!Good Luck and God Bless for saying a word about the mixed breed. It gave me a chance to say some things that are on my mind!!!!!!!

No dopgs are despised. It's the people who think that they have a purebred and spend a ton of money which only supports the back yard breeders. No one is ever going to get papers on a "designer" dog so I don't understand why people are willing to pay so much for them.

Dogs are bred to a certain standard that was established eons ago. Each breed was for a specific purpose in life. Today it's all about money and people don't realize that there are so many mixed breeds in the shelters. I'll bet you could have gotten a Lab/Poodle mix from a shelter for much less moeny and fewer health problems then what you will encounter in this dog's future due to poor breeding. (If you don't know what I mean by "poor breeding" that just proves my point all the more).

It's not the dog that's the problem. The dog is an innocent victim in all this. It's the people breeding, selling and buying these animals. I don't soubt that your dog is wonderful. What isn't wonderful is that you could have gotten the same thing while saving somebody from a shelter. You would have felt better about yourself for saving a life too.

ADDED...I just checked www.petfinder.com and found 35 of your Labradoodles up for adoption (and that was just the first few pages). All of them young, if not puppies.

They don't get a bad "wrap" or rap. They aren't despised. What's despised is the way that they are bred. They are usually two pet quality dogs who are thrown together to make money. Paying $1500 for a mutt is ridiculous.

You are confusing despising the practice with hating the result. There is a big difference.

I've never seen it said that purebreds are better than mutts. I really think you are seeing more than is really there. What *is* said is that breeding two poor quality dogs in order to make money is unethical. And when you breed two pet quality dogs, problems can occur.

Because these dogs are not purebreds, there is no breed standard and the breed club is shoddy. There are no guidelines really set up to make breeders ethical. While some take what they've learned from breeding purebreds responsibly and apply it to 'doodle' dogs, most do not. They only care about the bottom line.

Remember that ethically dogs are only to be bred to improve the breed or to fit a certain working niche. Doodle dogs are not. Therefore, breeding them is unethical for the most part. There are so many dogs in the world, breeding simply to make a pet is immoral and irresponsible.

I'm thrilled that you have a great dog. But, that doesn't make the practice and the outrageous amount charged for these dogs ok. He may be a great pet, but right now, you paid probably over a $1000 for a mutt. You can't put a price on a great pet, but I know that *my* money wouldn't go towards the reckless breeding mutts. Not with 3-5 million animals being killed each year in shelters, 75% of them being mutts.

Good luck to you family. : )

I haven't heard of any bad wrap with labradoodles. My neighbor has one, and he's great. I think getting from the right breeder is the key. You have to know how to breed two different breeds together to get the best quality of both.

I have a standard poodle myself and she's great, so any mix with a standard should be ok in my opinion :)

The only thing I don't understand is why someone would be willing to pay so much for a mixed breed and not know what qualities you will end up with. They are not even recognized by any kennel organizations. There is no reason why they should be worth more than any dog found in the pound.

I don't think anyone is giving the dog themselves a bad rap.
I just personally hate the fact that alot of them are being sold for $1,000 on the basis that they do not shed and are hypoallergenic. Then I see them in the shelters with a tag on their kennel that says Reason for Surrender: Owner was allergic. Or: Sheds too much. It upsets me that people are out there creating more dogs and claiming they are something that they are not..then they just end up in the pound..it's sad. Not the dogs fault, it's the fault of the BYB and/or puppymill. Then there are people who will pay a "breeder" all kinds of money for a mix, when they can walk into a shelter, or check petfinder and find the same breed (even puppies) for alot less and who are in need of a good home. I just will never understand that. Same holds true for purebreds. Unless you need a show quality dog, check the shelters before you go to a BYB or pet store.

I was grooming a Golden/Poodle mix just yesterday and wish I had my camera to take a pic of all the hair that was flying off of this dog as I groomed it.

I have nothing at all against mixed breeds..I own a wonderful mix. Best dog I've ever had..even over my purebred Standard Poodle. But, I only paid $50 for her from a shelter.

I was actually considering getting a goldendoodle too. But after doing more research, I decided that a Soft Coated Wheaten terrier is the way to go for us. They look similar but are an established breed. The doodle breeder wanted $2000. The SCWT breeder wants $1800 and both parents are champions multiple times over and of course have all the health tests done. Google images of the SCWT and see what you think. As with any breed, do your research! Good luck!

McNatt, you are a typical example of exactly what we're talking about. BMWs and mansions indeed, FYI my car is a 1990 (16 years old!) sub-compact that I do most of the repairs on myself because I can't afford a mechanic. And I live in a 100 year old farmhouse and do most of the maintenance on it for the same reason. And why do I live like this? To support my dogs, not the other way around.

It's the back-yard breeders, those who raise poor-quality purebreds and mutts with fancy names that are raking in the bucks. Minimal vet bills. Cheap food. No showing or registration expenses. No health testing expenses. Just breed and sell.

Like the other posters, I don't hate labradoodles, I hate the greedy people that breed them and take advantage of gullible buyers.

i wasn't aware they were up there with pits on being despised. i think you said it all as to why some people say bad things about the breed though. you said you weren't looking for a mutt or a purebred. well those are really your only choices in a dog. either you are getting a purebred breed recognized dog, or you are getting a mixed breed (aka-mutt). yes mutts are usually better health and temperment wise. but you go out and paid for a mixed breed. and too much by your own admission. you just supported someone who was out jumping on the designer dog bandwagon. a lab mix or anykind with poodle, shephered or whatever, can be found in shelters across the country. now if you felt that paying someone and you were able to see both parents and where the dog was raised, and that alone was worth the price, then great. if you were just looking to get this particular mix, and don't consider it to be a purebred, or a mutt, then what is it? your dog is a mutt. you paid top dollar for a mutt. there are breeders who mix these breeds, and some of them produce nice pups and take good care of them and find and have a waiting list for homes for the pups. but still this person is breeding a mutt for money, and is about as close to backyard breeding as you can get. it's the dog of the day is why they are getting a bad wrap. if labradoodles came out looking black and tan, there wouldn't be such a demand for them, i'll tell you that.

I am a breeder of Std Poodles & haven't heard of anyone who "hates" Labradoodles, as most people who love dogs love all dogs, myself included. However, have you noticed that when anyone wants to improve a breed of dog, they invariably cross-breed with a Poodle? I.e; Cockapoos, Yorkiepoos et al. Remember - Dog spelled backwards is God!

They are not despised, the breeders that breed them are. When you work hard to maintain (for example) the poodle standard and someone deliberatly cross breeds them it is irritating. Also I think with the new designer breeds that people are buying the standard goes out the window. I just hope the pounds are not filled with unwanted designer dogs when this fad passes.
