I wouldn't say its tough. But its hard because of some word pronunciations. With all respect to the first opinion about Egyptian slang: if you need to learn Arabic you have to learn modern classic Arabic, to be able to talk to different Arabic slangs. You need other Arabic nations to understand you when you speak. Don't start learning Arabic by one accent. When you learn modern classic Arabic - which is available on line- you will be able to read, right and merge with other cultures.

I took it for a while (about 8 years ago) and I've forgotten a lot of it. Yes, it's hard. My class originally had 24 students and we lost TWENTY of them to the abjad (the script.) It's not that hard, but some people found it impossible. Secondly, there's a lot of sounds English speakers are not used to making.

My personal difficulties were distinguishing the two 'th' sounds and two 't' sounds from each other. Also there isn't just a singular and plural, but also a 'dual' form for speaking to just two people!

That being said, I would NEVER suggest learning it on your own (mostly because of the sounds - you won't learn to make them without a native speaker correcting you.) If you have the opportunity to take classes, go for it.

If you are interested in learning Arabic, a good place to start would be with Egyptian (specifically - Cairene Arabic) because it is so widely recognized in the Arab world (it's all over movies, television and music). Arabic is a complex language with sounds that do not exist in English, so be prepared to make your face, mouth and throat do things you've probably never done before when speaking. Very best of luck to you!

Yes it is hard, but if you are determined to learn, you will. There are many dialects of Arabic, but all Arabic nations understand standard Arabic. You should learn that first, as it is proper Arabic.

Check out the Rosetta Stone Software....a little expensive but it really makes learning a ton easier. Any language other than your mother tongue is hard to learn...especially if you are an old goat and set in his ways....no wait...thats my wife saying that!!

in my opinion, it's not the toughest language there is, but i won't tell you that it is easy. once you learn the alphabet and connecting the letters, it gets a lot easier.
