Venice beach is a great place to "people watch"...it's not too far. Fashion Island is nice to shop and there are great retaurants there as well. Stay away from downtown LA. Head down towards San Diego if you get time....lots of great things to do down there....or just hit the beach!

Not sure what you're particular interests are, but there's lots to to in Newport Beach. It is the locaton of the TV show the "OC", so if you want to check out some of the filming sites, the Newport Beach CVB has a downloadable map. http://www.visitnewportbeach.com/pdf/TheOCMap.pdf
Also, if you like outdoors stuff, Newport Beach has one of the best ecological preserves in Southern California. http://www.ocparks.com/unbic/default.asp.
Shopping at Fashion Island is a must. This place offers a lot of high-end shops so has earned a reputation as a deluxe shopping area, but don't let that scare you off. This is a fabulous place to soak up the California sun, and there are lots of mid-level retailers and unique shops as well.
Hope that helps.

The long beach aquarium is a nice treat, you can also hop a ferry over to catalina island which is a fun day trip.
Disneyland the main park is neat they also have "Downtown Disney" an area filled with shops and such.
If you want to check out the LA area, then there are more sights such as Hollywood, and Universal Studios, etc.
Down south you can see San Diego sites like Sea World, really great, San Diego Wild Animal Park and also the San Diego Zoo. These are about an hour away by frwy. If you do plan to go see these sites check them out online first there are many special add on's that can be alot of fun, like a photo safarii at the wild animal park and various animal interactions at all san diego locations.

Everyone has touched on some great sites that are musts, but one really unique activity to do in Newport Beach is a gondola trip through the canals. It is so much fun, very peaceful, beautiful and you see some AMAZING houses! The gondola comes complete with french bread, cheese, sparkling cider, and fruit.
Also, if you are going to travel up to the Los Angeles area and like museums, the Getty Center is great. Of course there are the usual tourist stuff in Hollywood, like Grouman's Chinease Theater, the walk of Fame, the Kodak Theater and of course the famed Sunset Strip.
Have fun!

Let's see, the usuall places, like Disneyland, Fashion Island for shopping & eating. Maybe the Christmas Tree is still there. Laguna Beach is also very nice, with lots of nifty shops and restaurants.
If you're going to San Diego, visit the Jedit Master of SD, Local Wally. www.localwally.com.

I would go to Laguna Beach which is just south of Newport on PCH. This has a lot of artist galleries and stores.
Disneyland is about 20 minutes away.
If you have more time you could go up to Los Angeles or down to San Diego where there is a lot of things to do depending on what you are into.
