I have a Boston Terrier and he is 12 years old and has been itching his ears and groaning off and on for probably the last two months. I took him to the vet and they didn't know why he is itching his ears because he doesn't have ANYTHING in his ears. They can't find any gunk of any kind in his ears and I have been putting cleaning drops in his ears from the vet and that seems to help a little but I want to make sure and get rid of the problem so that it doesn't cause any harm to him in the long run.

If he's 12, he could very well be going deaf and "thinks" there is something in his ears that is making him not hear.

Take him back to the vet and have his hearing checked.

Your next step since you have been to see the vet is to go back and have blood work done to test for allergies. They can be allergic to anything and everything that humans can and sometimes weird things like ants and the plastic coating found on the bottom of rugs! Make sure and ask how much before you get it done sometimes it can be costly depending on where it is you live. Obviously isn't ear mites as they show up looking like coffee grounds in the ears, so they are dirty looking. If the ears smell bad than that's yeast infection, all dogs have a certain amount of yeast but sometimes they get an overgrowth. Allergies can bring the yeast overgrowth on...but sometimes it just happens in certain breeds that are more oily than others. Hope this helps.

It could be an alergy. They are usually food related. Our pets need quality pet food. Read the ingredients list and learn what the stuff on there is and what it does (or does not do) to/for our pets. A quick pet food 101. If the pet food contains corn/corn products or by products it is a poor quality food. Do not pay attention to advertising, they all say there food is great. Corn is a filler that can trigger skin problems. (allergies, skin problems, itching and excessive shedding) By products is anything from an animal not fit for human consumption, including cancerous tissue. Quality foods have meat as the first ingredient. California Natural, Solid Gold, Innova and Merrick are a few of the best brands available. I just took mine to the vet for a similar reason. She will sit and act normally and then suddenly scratch her ears desperately. The vet suggested that it could be allergies or buildup (though she didn't see any). You could try getting an allergy test for him and see if he is allergic to something around the house.

Could be ear mites. They are tiny & almost impossible to see. Ask your vet about this possibility.

Because they scratch? A dog scratches it ears because they itch. It could simply be an allergy. What do you feed the dog?
