I am PR and husband is black: I was taught spanish first...then english around 4. My 2 children both learned english first...and it became a problem when flipping the language. My daughter older child understands it, and can read it, but can only write a lil in spanish....but my son....he is almost a lost cause. My suggestion is do spanish first.

I would think you need someone to come in your house that speaks spanish 5 days a week 3 or 4 hours a day and talk to your baby. That might be the only way.

They say the best way to do it is have one parent speak to the child in each language. So if he's PR, then he should speak only spanish to the child, and you speak only english. That way your kid learns that these are different languages.

Unfortunately, since he doesn't speak the language, you'll have to have the grandparents do it.

I recommend that you learn your own language well enough to be able to teach it to your offspring. From what you've written here, it's obvious you need more study in the language. As far as your child learning two languages, speak both of them to the child from the day he/she is born. Studies show that children who learn two languages this way have very flexible reasoning capacities and capabilities. They apparently store the languages in two separate areas of the brain and connections are maintained between them. There seems to be an advantage of learning two or more languages from birth. So, I'd say, just speak both languages to your child as you would with one or the other.
