I have been working and paying taxes since I was 16 and just recently in the past couple of years qualified for Social Security, but if the agreement with Mexico is reached for SS benenifts, the recipients will be elgible after 18 months? Is there something wrong with this picture?

So you guys think that all these poor and working class americans, who could not save for retirement or have been stricken with some illness and cannot work and have paid in for years should face the brunt of the "payback" for our governments doings?

The rich are not affected by this its the workign class and working poor.

I can not believe that the American government would for a second consider this yet alone write it into law.
I r'cd my SSI statement 2 days ago reflecting what I had paid in throughout the years and what my estimated payout would be depending on when I chose to retire 62, 65 being partial payments and at age 70 I could retire and receive full benefits.

My SSI statement also told me that if I retired after the year 2040, unless legislation changed the situation, my actual payout would only be 70% of what I was actually entitled to.

The idea that I would lose one single dime of what I have earned for the last 20 years to someone that has no right to be here in the first place, someone that has used deception to make a living,
MAKES MY BLOOD BOIL.

here's a link to a pretty interesting articles from the Washington Times on this nifty legislation:

You are right. It is not just for citizens of a nation to have to pay in for 10 years before they qualify for return benefits while foreign nationals would only have to pay in for 1.5 years to qualify. If anyone does not believe there is a Social Security crisis now, they must be blind and completely ignorant to not see that this will precipitate a Social Security crisis. Remember, if you worked 50 years and paid in the maximum annual amount every year of that 50 (highly unlikely), you would get your money back in only 23 months. Most people are surviving well past 23 months after retirement these days and we aren't putting in the max. This will be horrible for America and you can bet the Middle Class will be the ones paying more Social Security taxes to make up for the shortfall.

It isn't just that agreement. The provisions of that agreement were essentially folded into the Senate Immigration bill, as well. If it passes with those terms in it (and I understand that McCain, Kennedy and others will be introducing it again very shortly) it will be incorporated in the amnesty provisions.

And no, it not only isn't fair, it is a betrayal of trust by our government to raid our retirement services as well as other services to entice 'cheap' labor for employers. It is only cheap to the employers, of course. Were they a board of directors of a corporation diluting an insecurely funded pension fund, there is no question someone would bring suit.

But then Bush and De Lay were buddies, weren't they? Maybe we shouldn't be surprised with his cavalier attitude towards other people's pension funds.

fangta... the difference is that Mexico's reduced economy means it would be a huge drain on our resources, the benefits being 'traded' are in no way equal in this case. And in Mexico it would take our people 20 years to vest whereas theirs would vest in 10 years here. More incentive to break our laws to come. They shouldn't come illeglly at all.

On top of that, of course, a lot more of them come here and would be draining our funds than go there from here. The gloss of 'evenhandedness' doesn't stand up to even a direct glance at the subject.

Also, for years the government and pro illegals have been saying 'look they pay into SS and can't collect' to pretend that was anything more than a slight off set to the overall cost of their being here. Now that slight offset would also be removed.

I think it is a travesty the way our government has been using and abusing the taxpayers' funds in Social Security. This program is in trouble only because our precious government has misappropriated our money in paying for their mismanagement of the government workings. We need to take back our program and insist that our government honor those who have paid in for decades to find out that there is no money there because it has been stolen for purposes like the unqualified participants that they have so generously included in the program. I am about three years away from retirement, and I will not be able to count on SS for squat toward my livlihood. It is definitely not fair to us, and I think it is time that we get our leaders' attention.

Very few things in life are fair. I wouldn't count on Social Security for anything. Far better to rely on yourself than handouts from self serving bureaucrats and politicians. Invest in your own future and vote.

The agreement you are referring to is not yet inforce. It does not automatically make anyone elligible in18 months. If signed, this agreement will extend to Mexican immigrants the same benefits that are already allowed to Canadians, English and sevearl other immigrants that considers their work in their native nation as credit towards Social Security elligibility. The average Mexican cannot just come here and work for 18 months and retire. Immigrants that would benefit from such an agreement will only benefit based on their contributions to the Social Security Trust Fund. This is NOT a giveawy and it is not any easier for immigrants to become entitled than it is for you. Nothing is being taken from you and nobody is benefitting more than you.

Yep. You can thank the governor of California for making things easy for Mexican immigrants because they pull a huge voting block in California. Send him an email thanking him.

You are absolutely right.

My Mother busted her butt and now at 65, terminally ill, she went through hell and back to get help, yet illegals had better care than she did.

People wonder why we can't stand illegal immigrants. Sheesh, you don't have to be that smart to figure that one out, just policitally correct to not see it.

This is just absolutley ridiculous!
