I go to this doctor(walk in office) and he just loves giving you a bunch of prescriptions. He usually gives two to three. I don't like it. The other day, he gave a prescription for antibiotic for my daughter's common cold. She didn't even have any ear infection. I don't want my child to build resistance to antibiotic later. What is wrong with this doctor? Does anyone one if they get money or something in return? Do you always fill the prescription even though the doctor is wrong?

Thank you all for your answers.
Anita, I had to take my daughter to the doctor because I wanted to rule out strep throat as if she did have one, I would have needed the antibiotics as if the strep wasn't treated, it may affect her liver and etc. Thanks.

To answer your question, yes doctors get perks from drug companies when they write for their products. Also the more prescriptions that are written at an appointment, the insurance can be billed at a higher rate. However, I have to ask, why are you so pissed off that he wrote a prescription for you daughter? What did you want him to do? If all you daughter had was a common cold, why are you wasting the doctor's time by taking her anyway?

EDIT: Jojo, I'm sorry for jumping the gun. I guess a rule out for strep makes sense. I thought you were saying that you knew she had a common cold, so you took her to the doctor.
I agree with David about people who insist on antibiotics, however I do not agree with the part about kickbacks, maybe personally you aren't getting them, but they are given. Maybe not in cash, but still perks definitely. My niece, for example, tells me of the elaborate lunches drug reps will bring to her office, and all the cool gadgets, or the 500 dollar medical book they bought for her, etc.

If I have this correctly doctors get paid by drug companies if they do so many prescriptions. When a drug rep comes into the office they offer the doctors samples of the drugs and they set it up for each prescription you give (prescriptions have to be filled) we'll give you so much money. That's how it worked at my doctors office, they kept prescribing me to a medication that obviously wasn't working and I ended up going to the hospital and that's where they told me how some doctors work. You might want to look into a new doctor for your daughter, because you are right, you don't want her to build a high tolerance for antibiotics.

Well, after my 33 years in the health field, I have yet to see or get any kickbacks for my prescriptive habits. In my experience, I get more complaints from patients who believe they need antibiotics when I know they do not, than giving out unnecessary prescriptions. Use some common sense, people!!

They can definitely profit from prescribing certain meds. Why do you think so many people are on anti depressants? It's a multi billion dollar industry. Always question why a doctor is prescribing a certain drug. It may not be because it is the best one for you. I don't know about your other question.

Some doctors do not take as much notice of prescribing guidelines as they should. You are right to be concerned that your daughter was offered antibiotics when they dont seem to be needed.
Doctors do not get paid per prescrition, they get paid per patient (in the UK anyway, cant say about anywhere else) and get paid whether they see the patient or not;

yes, doctors get a kick back on all prescriptions. You have a right to ask the doctor why. If he doesn't answer, i would see someone else.

I don't think they're supposed to but I'm sure doctors get some kind of kickback or at the very least incentives from the drug companies.
