Loaded question, how old are your students?
In seeking purpose would you not need to answer these questions first?
Who is God?
Who is man?
Why did Jesus come into the world?
When we are able to have knowledge with understanding in regard to the answers to these questions the foundation has been laid to pursue purpose.
What is the purpose of God towards man?
In seeking to gain understanding of God's purpose toward man; what are the role(s) that God the Father has and fulfills for His children and the rest of mankind? What are the role(s) that Jesus has for those who know Him in person and to those who do not? What are the role(s) that the Holy Spirit has and fulfills to mankind? Another way of looking at the question is to define the offices, even though they are one, that the three seperate persons of God hold and how they effect our daily life and our personal and intimate one on one relationship with the Creator of the universe and all the life in it.
What is the purpose of man towards God?
What are the roles and responsibilities that God has given to man and that he is accountable for? It is only when we begin to truly understand our new identity as a new creation of God and from God; where the old has passed away and you are no longer who you were in your past that we can begin to understand our true purpose for mankind and our own individual purpose that we were created for. No one is an accident and we all are created with a purpose in mind. Since God has promised all men that we would always have the power of choice we get to choose what purpose in our life that we pursue. The one that God created us for or a purpose of our own choosing.
The real question is how do we find out what the purpose of our creation is? Since we are all formed and made by God the answer revolves around God. It is by submitting our heart and our desires to God through praise and worship, prayer and reading, learning and applying the bible to our daily life that God not only reveals Himself to you, He also reveals the calling and purpose of your life. As you gain understanding of His purpose for your life He reveals as your Creator, how He designed you to walk out this expression of His will for you. These revelations are only given to the extent that you are able to handle or accept. If you are in hot pursuit of finding out why you are here, what you are here to do and how, in service to God, then you will get a bigger picture earlier rather than later. If you are not sure you really want to know or how much you want to find out, then this will reflect how much God reveals about your life, for Him, to you. This is a process and is different for everyone. Everything happens in God's time and not ours so be willing to wait and accept that God knows you best and HE DOES HAVE A PLAN FOR YOUR LIFE. Waiting on God does not mean being stagnate, although can mean being still before God. While you are waiting on more direction and understanding you want to continue to be open to His hand molding and shaping you and building the intimacy you have with your heavenly Father.
I hope this is of help for what you are trying to accomplish. God bless you and your efforts as you strive to sow God's seed into the lives of those around you.

Purpose: The reason a thing came to be
Meaning: Why that thing is used.
Since I came to be entirely through naturalistic principles, ther could not have been a reason behind it, so I have no purpose. However, I find meaning in knowledge, so I make its pursuit my constant meaning in life.
Purpose and meaning can be explained as follows. I buy a bag of water-grenade balloons. These are balloons that are made with strong and weak spots, designed to help them pop and splash when they hit something. This is their purpose -- to hold water and deliver it. However, they have no 'meaning' just sitting on a store shelf. When I purchase a bag, and fill one with water, thinking to sneak up behind my mother at a family picnic, it has meaning -- I want to splash my mother in the name of good humored fun.
Purpose and meaning are independant of each other. Purpose is an inherant trait, meaning is an ascribed trait, ascribed by the user or possessor.

The only purpose to life is that which you give it yourself.
There is no ultimate universal purpose to everything. If the Earth were to explode tomorrow, it wouldn't affect the rest of the universe much. Things explode in it all the time.
You have to figure out your own purpose for yourself, however you choose to define it. Nobody else can do it for you, though they might try to use you for their own purposes.
Personally, I have lots of various purposes in my life and many others that have already been accomplished. To list any here would be to trivialize the rest. The best I can summarize them is to say that I try to live life to its fullest, because this is the only life we have.

Do you feel empty? Is there something lacking? Do you long for something but don't quite know what it is? Are you longing for fulfillment? Are you unsatisfied with the daily routine of work, or school, or whatever? Maybe when you are by yourself and you look deep inside, you just don't feel content. Something is missing. Maybe you've discovered that indulging the desires of your flesh and mind have not produced the peace and tranquility that you need.
When I was younger I sought many things to replace God. I tried to identify with something, a cause, a philosophy, even a look. I was seeking an identity. For a while those things where entertaining and even exciting. But ultimately, the same emptiness came back. I can remember one night I was looking for something to break the boredom. I watched the people around me as they were pursuing the same thing I was and suddenly I realized how futile and empty it all was. I realized that if I got what I wanted I would still be unsatisfied. I wanted more than the same old thing. I wanted something that wouldn't leave me feeling empty after a little while. I wanted something real. Somehow, I knew I could only be satisfied by encountering God and finding His purpose.
In His great mercy, God has touched me. In the midst of my sin, in spite of pursuing my fleshly desires, He came to me and healed my heart. Emptiness is no longer my companion. In fact, it is so unfamiliar to me that I can barely remember what it was like. Now, I have peace, contentment, and fulfillment because I have found salvation and fellowship with God. This fellowship is found in Christ. "God is faithful through whom you are called into fellowship with his son, Jesus Christ," (1 Cor. 1:9). When you find Christ and his salvation, you discover your purpose and you find your hope fulfilled.

My father once talked to my great uncle, who was a minister for a local church. In the conversation my father stated, "I don't see the point of attending church these days...it doesn't really do anything for me." My g. uncle replied, "The point is, its not what the church can do for you, its what can you do for the church."
Community is a purpose, relative to a congregation...and working together to serve the community, overall (including the outlying community that isn't a direct part of the congregation...such as, clothing, food, help...focus is key). It is how the Big G answers prayers--through his servants, per se...in many different ways. I think many have lost this focus--opinion.

Honestly, it seems to me that I am here to learn. I view the earth as a dimension of learning. Perhaps we are obtaining knowledge to live on in the next life, where everything is more advanced. Beyond that, purpose is rather relative.

my purpose is to fill my head with knowledge, to give my self to science, and know that i am made of star dust like our planet and everything on it
knowing that the earth is unique and its not going to last forever, that our solar system had many other planets but ours is the only one with life. move our world a little bit and no life. knowing that our universe is brimming with the materials by which to make planets and life, (dark nebulei consist of lots of carbon, the stuff off life) knowing that stars and our own sund are busily turning hygrogen inot helium, and the larger stars are making, yes making the heavier elements, like iron gold uranium. we can see it happening all over the cosmos
knowing that our bodies share a connection with our oceans, we have 70% water in our bodies and 3 % salt in that water, smae as the ocean
knowing that some 30 elements make all the living things on the planet connection use with everything
and finnally knowing that i and everyone came from the earth. we eat the plants with grown from the earth ense we grow from the earth
