I am a guy, with somewhat long hair. I get compliments from the ladies all the time about it... it's been quite a lesson learning what works and doesn't work... you can expect your hair to grow around 1/2" to 1" a month. Be patient...
Stay away from shampoos and conditioners made by Herbal Essence, and other shampoos that have heavy wax additives, such as Pantene. These weigh down your hair, give it shine and such for a day, and then all the dirt and grime picked up from the day you washed it, accumlulates in your hair. It get's dirty faster, feels heavy, and just becomes unmanageable.
My hair is semi thick... definitely wavey, and after a day goes into ringlets. Those are a nightmare to untangle, especially after a hard ride on the motorcycle. Sooo... avoid the hair dryer, always towel dry, and oddly in Canada the drug marts have $1.97 bottles of shampoo, just the regular Life Brand. Lather once... I don't recommend repeating, unless it's been a day or two since you washed your hair. This has a tendency to strip out a lot of the natural oils your hair has generated and makes it feel like straw.
Do not use two-in-one shampoos. How can you trust something that is supposed to clean your hair, at the same time it's supposed to be depositing conditioners? Avoid anything that is for thin hair, even if you have thin hair, these conditioners are wholly meant to build it up to make it thicker. Heavy waxes as mentioned above are bad... So... Children conditioners, detanglers and such I find work best, and again I generally go with whatever is cheapest. It's bad enough going through a bottle of conditioner every other week.
The most important aspect... Spend the time in the shower working the conditioner into tangles, coat the ends especially, and make sure it's thoroughly coated. Do not rinse it out right away. Let the conditioner sit in your hair for a bit, at least 5 minutes, then rinse it out. Finish doing whatever it is you need to do, and about 5 minutes after that, rinse your hair again, you'll find it go somewhat silky, continue to massage out tangles. A lot of the hair that has naturally fallen out will be the cause for most of the mess... keep it groomed.
Rat nests, are caused by damaged hair. Try to avoid hair ties, they tend to rough up the hair where they sit. If you do intend to use them, get the solid ones without the metal clips. Your hair will get tangled up in it. A good boar bristle round brush, is about all I can get through my hair. Using regular combs, pin style brushes, etc, just results in utter frustration. Always start from the bottom [ends] of the hair, and work your way up, so you're not compounding the knots. You'll eventually figure out what works and what doesn't...
Chemical treatments such as hair dyes, bleaching agents, are just going to destroy your hair. The chemicals that are then used to repair the damage, frizz, etc, rarely does anything more than cause further damage. Avoid them...
Food... keep up your vitamin A, B[1,2,6,12], E, and protein, such as nuts, peanut butter, eggs, and low fat meats... chicken breasts and fish would be best. Milk, and milk products help, if you can stomache soy milk, and soy protein based products, more power to you. Peace...

My hair is also very ornary and long. What I found is that you should find a good conditioner to tame those locks! With a right conditioner, it should be easier to comb through. Don't always go for the expensive brands either- I use a kid's shampoo and conditioner (no tears) and it works great. You should look for conditioners that address curly or frizzy hair and your hair quality type (Fine, thick, etc) You should also watch out for split ends, and get a trim every 4-5 months. It will help your hair grow out healthier. Believe it or not, vitamins and a healthy diet also help your hair grow longer, but everyone's hair grows at different speeds.
Also there are products out there to help you comb out those tangles even if the conditoner doesn't do it's job- Loreal Kids: "Tangle Tamer" works really great, along with Johnson and Johnson's "No More Tears."
And for you being a guy with long hair, more power to you. I hope that this helps. ^^:

I love a guy with long hair.... lol
I couldn't help ya with the staightening problem, (you have curly hair I take it?) since I have straight hair, that's down past my butt. And that's no lie.
My suggestions would be lots of vitamin K. That was what caused my hair (and nails) to grow like wildfire while I was pregnant. Don't wash the hell outta your hair, it will cause it to become brittle and won't seem to grow. Use a decent conditioner too. Don't bother with Garnier's long & strong, it sux. lol Don't over do it either. Don't force your hair to do things it doesn't want to do by styling or combing too much, otherwise you could break it. Blow dryers are not our friend. Also, keep it trimmed, since it will weed out all the breakage points and split ends. Watch what kind of brush or comb you use too. The soft bristles seem to work wonders and don't cause breakage.
Good luck Dude, and make them ladies out there (like me!) drool!!!
;o)

you can buy all sorts of shampoo that help with growing hair jst have a look in boots and herbal stores!! bt if u decide to grow it really long make sure you get the dead ends cut off every ...6 months or u shall gt stragaly hair. Also get ur barber to style it so it doesn't look a mess!! You could also invest in ghd's to keep it straight or even have it permently chemically straightened!!

wasnt really sure what you ment by your question but.. get some detangler spray and a wide tooth comb if you are having problems with tangles, but if you are talking about making it go straight instead of being a bit wavy get some straighting serum. BTW guys look really sexy with long hair!

When I grew my hair it took me two years to get it to go in a ponytail, but just left it and let it grow.
it is an urban legend that the more you cut it the faster it grows, so just leave it and comb it and wash it than your be fine.

You need to get it trimmed regularly, even if you're growing it long. You get dry, damaged and split ends then it goes frizzy.
To get it sleek you need to keep it in good condition from the roots to the end of the hair. Use a decent shampoo and conditioner, Pantene is really good. Tell your barber you're growing it and they should only give it a very light trim to keep it in shape.

I grew my hair long and it's great! The only thing is that you will need to get either a detangler or a good conditioner every now and again!

wash it as often as u can and use straighteners, try using detangling shampoo and conditioner, i would also say get ur hair trimmed every 6-8 weeks, it sounds daft but will grow quicker. you could also try takin hair and nail vitamin tablets, makes ur hair grow faster.
