You go to the vet, because either way you'll need to get some medicine from them.

This is going to sound very gross and disgusting, but
get a pair of latex gloves, some newspaper, and a
magnifying glass. Also a friend or relative to help.
Spread the paper on a table. Put on the gloves.
Have the friend hold the cat tightly. Gently pull out the worm.
Put the worm on the paper. Let the cat go.
Pick up the magnifying glass and look at the worm.
A tape worm is flat and looks like it has tiny, flat segments.
Round worms are just that short and round.
Both are white or pinkish white or creamy colored.
Tape worm go to vet for stronger worm meds.
Round worm ....go to walmart and get a box of cat and kitten wormer and follow directions.

BTW ....kill worm....change litter box at least 3 times a day
(while cat has worms)....ALSO wear gloves when you change it and wash your hands after.....do not let your cat lick you either...
Why....because humans can catch the worms, if you don't take proper precautions.

If a cat or kitten vomits up a worm, there is a good chance this is a roundworm (especially in a kitten). Roundworms are long, white and described as looking like spaghetti. Tapeworms can also be vomited up but these are flat and obviously segmented. If you are not sure what type of worm you are seeing, bring it to your vet’s office for identification.

Fecal testing for worm eggs is a must for kittens and a good idea for adult cats having their annual check up. Obviously, if there are worms present, they must be laying eggs in order to be detected but, by and
large, fecal testing is a reliable method of detection.

It's not exactly important what worm it is, it's more important that you know he has worms and needs to be dewormed.

You can bring a sample of the stool with the worm in it for identification from your vet and then they will prescribe medication for you. They will need at least one, maybe two negative stool samples to say that he is free of worms.

Round worm! Tape worms don't poke out like that. Regardless, your cat needs to be treated. Get some de-wormer from the vet or your local pet store!

Good luck!

I m a medical technologist (clinical lab scientist). You could differentiate it by looking under the microscope. You get the worm, put it on a glass slide cover it with a cover slip. Look under the microscope. If you see segements, then it is a tape worm, if it is continous without any segments then it is a round worm. Be careful because it may infect you.

They are probably tape worm segments, looks kinda like rice. Round worms look like spaghetti. Either way, take your cat to the vet for treatment. Most often, cats get tapeworms from eating fleas, which harbor tape worm eggs. This is in no way implying that I think you should treat him yourself! Over the counter medications have been known to cause seizures and death in cats, especially Hartz products. Please go to your vet. Good luck. :o)

your cat could very well have BOTH kinds of worms - a stool sample taken to the vet is the ONLY way to determine - and then the dewormer should also be from the vet as the dewormers sold in stores do NOT kill all types of worms...

It's a round worm.

Tape worms don't show that way.

Get some wormer from the petstore and get to it.

Good Luck!

It doesn't really matter....she needs to be wormed either way. Most wormers will take care of more than just one type of worms....a good one to try is the Carmel flavored one they sell at Wal-Mart......my cats love the taste....which makes it easy on you.
