YES and NO the window for renewing the VEL is two weeks before and after the due date. However it is an offence not to be showing a current disc while on the road. "License in post" isn't good enough if you come up against a jobsworth. Not renewing within 2 weeks is an offence as is not declaring SORN by the expiry date

No you dont. There never was a legal 2 week grace period, it was just one of these grey area's and it was just taken for granted that there was and still is. If your not taxing the car for whatever reason you must declare a SORN> Statatory Off the Road Notification. The DVLA are all computorised now and if you dont tax your car by the date it is due or declare a SORN it will show up on their data base and automatically issue £40 fine and back tax due.

No, they abandoned that ( reward for people who can't plan ) a few years ago.
The only way you can drive home from work is to buy it now over the internet. You'll need current insurance and a modern MOT with a barcode.
In fact, as the adverts say, you are creaping up the list of "todo"s the police have so the sooner the better. They don't have to see your outofdate disc on the car. DVLA will know NOW that you are a criminal and probably already plannig a dawn raid.

No. As soon as midnight comes on the day your car tax expires the police can fine you even if the car is parked in the road outside your house.

No, not at all, and you need to be careful because they now not only drive around the streets looking for out of date tax they also have cameras along the road side.

No.
It was once in some police forces' standing orders not to prosecute for the first 15 days after the licence had expired. I doubt if it would apply now. The law was always that it was an offence.

I have never heard of allowance 2 weeks. I would get down the post office ASAP instead of wasting my time on here asking the question.
