Can you have an allergic reaction to penicillin 5 days after you've already been taking it? I woke up this morning and the left side of my jaw feels sore and a little swollen. Not too sure if it's something to be concerned about, and whether or not I should continue taking my pills...

Muscular pain is not an allergic reaction. Allergic reactions to antibiotics tend to appear as a rash. Unless it's interfering with your breathing, keep taking your antibiotics. (If you don't finish a course of antibiotics, you risk creating a stronger infection which is RESISTANT to drugs.)

Some times, allergic reaction to a drug may be delayed. Call the doctor and stop the medication, if so advised and see the physician who prescribed it ASAP. Your reaction may be mild, but the doctor would know what's best on seeing you.

I have severe reaction to Penicillin. An injection would kill me. I went into a seizure when I was given it in 1969. I was saved because someone recognized the reaction and immediately gave me an antidote (adrenaline). Oral penicillin would give me a tingling sensation on my fingertips within the hour. I have to wear a tag because of this.

So don't play around with allergic reaction. See the doctor NOW.

It is possible to develop an allergy to anything at any time. You aren't listing classic symptoms of an allergic reaction, however, any swelling in the area of your mouth should be evaluated. Call your doctor. If he wants you to stop taking the penicillin, he may want to start you on another antibiotic that is not in the cillin family, such as erythromycin. Antibiotics like penicillin need 10 days to work, so don't just stop taking it without checking with your doctor first. You don't want the first infection to come back. Good luck.

Usually, allergic reactions occur immediately when your body is allergic. But I would call the doctor and let them know what your new symptoms are. Your body may still be having an allergic reaction if it can not tolerate the penicillin anymore.

Yes it is, I trust you have contacted your G.P. and have taken him off the medication. He may swell especially around the eyes, Any kind of reaction is normally apparent after three or four days. Tonsillitis is horrible, (I know I had mine out, many years ago, but havent forgotten how painfull it is to have. I also had a reaction to Penicillin). This may sound "barking mad" but my mum used to boil Turnips which is a naturally strong antibiotic, you boil them until they become pulp and drink it like soup. I still do that now, when I am not feeling that great. Worth a try, just got to get your son to drink it. Good luck, wish him better.

Yes you can have an allergic reaction after being on medication for 5 days. It does not sound like an allergic reaction you are having but call your docs office this morning and have his nurse ask him what he feels you should do.

What were you taking Penicillin for? Allergic reactions can happen anytime. If you were treated for a dental problem or recent oral surgery you need to have the DDS check you. That goes for any medical reason also. Take care. SW RNP

Yes you can, personally i am NOT allowed to take Penicillin in "PURE" form try to get it mixed up with another kind, it worked wonders for me.!Been subject to trial test on the stuff,54 years ago, don't dare to use it in pure form, if i do could be totally, out for 3-4 days, or just as if nothing has happened, then Wham!! out as a light, in an undignified way. Get the stuff, either in synthetic or blended form ok!??

It's possible to be allergic to penicillin. I would call your doctor before it's time for your next dose, and let him/her know what's going on.
