Hiya,

You need a bit more specialist knowledge than you will find here at the Yahoo Zoo.

I did loads of research on family members from the Great War. Most of my lines of enquiry, and answers were obtained from the forums of this fantastic site : http://1914-1918.invisionzone.com/forums/

They pals there wil be much more helpful to you.

Oh, and you might want to do a search of the cCommonwealth War Graves Commision website to get a unit number for your man, just Google CWGC, its totally free.

godd luck with your research.

I am assuming you are speaking about the old English pennies that are approx the size of a 50p, if so then they were used to cover the eyes of someone that just died (as people died at home a lot in those days) according to my grandparents it was meant to ease the transition from earth to heaven and for them to show they had paid their way through life. I think this tradition stopped in the late 1800's but was carried on into the 1900's by some families that would not give up this tradition. BIT morbid isn't it

Denise's grandparents gave an adapted version of the tradition for more modern times. The tradition stretches back to the days of mythos, when coins were placed on the eyes of the dead to pay the ferry man Charon to convey the dead across the river Styx.

Well if it is considered something like a penny to put on someone's eye after death, then it is used to pay Charon on the river Styxx. He was the man who controlled the boat which would take you across the river, allowing you into your after-life, whichever route you are taking...
