To explain further, a red (or crimson) tide is caused by a mutant form of algae that occur when weather and temperature conditions are just right. Toxins from the one-celled algae can kill fish and even sicken humans who eat contaminated filter-feeder species such as oysters, clams and mussels. The red tide algae also can cause respiratory symptoms when it's stirred up by the surf. There is no known way of combatting a crimson tide, one just has to wait it out and suffer. It causes massive fish kills which wash up on the beach to rot and stink.

So, Alabama, being a gulf of mexico state, is very familiar with the natural occurance of crimson tides and the unstoppable nature of them.

Seems normal to me to name a powerhouse football team after such a thing...similar to naming a team the Hurricanes or the Tornados.

The Crimson Tide is the nickname for the sports teams of the University of Alabama, whose colors are crimson and white. The phrase "crimson tide" refers to the way that the football team just rolls over their opponents. The school's chant is "Roll, Tide, Roll". The movie is called "Crimson Tide" because the submarine that is portrayed in the movie is the USS Alabama and the captain refers to the state and the university in his speech to the crew before sailing. There is another, subtler reference in the use of "Crimson Tide" as the movie title. During the Cold War, many books and movies used the term "Red" in the title to refer to the Soviet Union (for example, Tom Clancy's "Red Storm Rising"). Thus, since the film depicts post-Cold War events in relation to Russia and a possible nuclear exchange with the Russians, "crimson" is also a reference to the former-Soviet Union and the former Cold War.
