Heck, I've been diving around sharks all around the World. I've been with hammerheads in the Galapagos, nurses in Cozumel, blues off Monterrey, and Blacktips off Palau. In most cases, the sharks either ignore the diver or are scared off by the air bubbles. Sure, divers can get bit, by doing stupid things like putting their hands in the shark's mouth or grabbing the shark's tail (well, I did that once, but the shark didn't bite me). Normally, if a diver is attacked, it is while swimming on the surface. At that point, the diver looks just like the shark's favorite meal - a seal or sea lion. The shark will come up from below, bite the diver, and then spit them out, when they figure out that the diver isn't a meal. Of course, that doesn't help the diver much, who might bleed to death from the bite.
In general, sharks are misunderstood and should be left alone, not feared.

It depends on the type of shark as to whether a diver would be in danger, obviously the great white is the most dangerous & any diver would never take chances & only study it with the protection of a cage. Then you start coming down the line of breeds & certainly there are some that you can swim with fairly safely. But I can tell you this here & now NOT ONE SINGLE DIVER in this world would ever trust a shark, no matter what breed it is.

Scuba divers do get attacked by sharks. Scuba divers resemble seals and that is a staple diet of sharks in the S-African waters. They also attack them not intentionally when they are spearfishing and have the fish stuck on the spear without removing them.

Scuba divers have been attacked by sharks. "During the 20th century here were 108 authenticated unprovoked shark attacks reported from the Pacific Coast of North America, with 50 (46%) directed at divers. "

The scuba divers don't bother them and if they do they usually run off unless their is blood in the water near the scuba diver.

FACT: Every year around the world, The number of people that are killed by sharks is about the same as being killed in a plane crash. You`re almost 4 times as likely to die from being trampled by a donkey than you are from dieing in a plane crash. SHARKS DON`T LIKE TO EAT HUMANS!!! contrary to urbain myths, old movies and parinoid-shark-haters, there is NO SHARK IN THE WORLD that WANTS to attack a human. Plain and simple, we are not their main source of food, so they generaly don`t want anything to do with us. FACT: May 27th 1982, A recerch scientist met up with a wild tiger shark while studing coral on a reef with his team. Two week later in their reaserch, that shark you return every day and alow that scientist to pet it and by the time they left another week later, evenhold it`t fin as it swam so it could pull him along. Sharks arn`t evil. They are actually quite freindly. 91% of shark attacks are becaue they mistake thrashing beach-bathers for woonded seals or other food that they eat. These are the pople who don`t know who to swim an cause a rucus. Sine you aparently know hoe to swim well, you don`t have that problem. 89% of people survive these mistake attacks becaue the shark realises that they are not a seal and lets go right away. most of them don`t even have a scar. Most stories of shark suvivors are made to soud terrible. They make thses stories found much worse than they usually are. so looking them up isn`t goingto help you. They are madeto soud like the suvivors are super lucky and incredilbe people. The fact is, most of the time the shark is thinking ``screw this. I`m gonna find somthing smaller!`` FACT: Sharks generaly go for prey that are one fouth of their size. This means that you would have to meet up with a shark that is four times the size of a full grown human before it want to eat you. The only shark in the world that can easily grwon that big is the Whale shark, but they only eat plankton. Maui, isn`t skark infested. the chances that you will even see a shark unless you are looking for one, is very VERY slim the chancethat it will be up close is even slimmer. Don`t deprive yourself from doing somthing you love because you are scared. NOTHING IS GOING TO HAPPEN TO YOU while you are there. Honestly, Ièm be more worried that there will be a donkey farm by your hotel. =)

They do attack them - it's just not common as only expert divers go in shark infested waters.
