Why are we forced to cover 3 vehicles when only 2 are driven at any given time? Seems to me that drivers should be covered for all vehicles that they own, not each vehicle.

Okay, What is the situation...is there a lien on this 3rd vechicle? Is it financed or do you own it out right? If it isn't financed then you can if you choose to..NOT cover it. But keep in mind if you did drive it FOR ANY REASON and then had an accident or other type claim....then it WOULD NOT BE covered. Insurance follows the auto itself NOT the driver...thats just how it works.

But bottom line if the car is financed then you must carry insurance on it...if you own the car outright then its your decision on whether or not you want to insure it!!!

Because insurance goes with the vehicle, not with the driver. Each policy covers a specific vehicle and lists the VIN of that vehicle. Just because you have insurance on your 68 Ford Granada doesn't mean you're covered driving Aunt Gertrude's 98 Mazda.

And I suppose that the car that isn't being driven couldn't be borrowed by a friend or relative while you were driving the other two? Or one day you wake up and both of your other cars don't start so you have to drive the third.

Insurance IS for all vehicles you own, whether you drive them all the time or not. I'm confused by the question.

In theory, all three could be driven at once, and all three could be in accidents at once.

As far as covering per driver as opposed to per vehicle, in terms of liability, that seems like a reasonable proposition, except consider that you can have an accident in a vehicle with an unlicensed or uninsured (if we went that route) driver, but there's no accidents without vehicles, so it makes sense to insure per vehicle.

Each vehicle must be insured whether you drive it or not. Unless it is parked in a garage, every vehicle you own must be registered and insured.

Because there are only two of you, the third car is generally discounted if you are using the same insurance company.

since over all all the vehicles are on the road all the vehicles have to be insured as no body knows any can meet with an accident any time
