Candy, especially cotton candy. An attractive hand-held magnifying glass or one of those sheets that magnify when placed over a printed surface. Ear phones that tune out noise and would allow him to hear the tv louder without disturbing the peace of others. A warm "smoking" jacket. A soft memory foam mattress topper. A blank scrapbook. A disposable camera. Picture of you in a frame.

I recently went to a party for a 90 year old. Most of the people there knew she lived on a small pension, so like many others, I gave a card with $25 in it. I learned later she received about $800 in cash & was was very happy to receive it. If your person is not strapped for cash, insert a coupon ( made by you). " I am available to help you in any way on the morning of _________. Please call me at ____________________."

You could find some of his really old family photos and have them refurbished and put in a nice frame.

Or create a project where you compare how things were in the world on the date he was born and how things are on his birthday in 2007. Some examples: historical events, cost of food, housing, politics, etc.

The best gift, in my opinion, for an older person is a "service" gift. IE: housecleaning, personal shopper, lawn service, etc. Or a gift of your time......say, one hour of reading to him per week or whatever.....or taking him somewhere...that sort of thing. They have all the "stuff" they need usually and almost always appreciate someone just spending time with them.

My 84 yr. old mother said the best gift I ever gave her was our "Once a Month Lunch" date. That was 4 years ago and we still do it.
