8 years ago I contracted shingles of the head. My doctor refused to prescribe me Acylovir despite my asking for it several times. During the course of the year my head tilted to one side and was difficult to move, my face was continuosly painfull/itchy. After nearly a year my tongue became paralised. I have difficulty eating and swallowing. I fell dizzy and have sight pand digestive problems. I on several occasions discussed my prognosis with my doctor and if I should take my company insurance as I was finding it difficult working - he gave no advice. Eventually I was made redundant as I was not working as before. I have now been diagnosed with aquired neuromyotonia by the London Neuro Hospital, whom I visited after complaining to another doctor of my frustrations. This was caused by the untreated shingles. I only got actions when I demanded second opinions etc. Do I have a case against my doctor who didnt seem to give a damm?

You have the responsibility of getting a second opinion as soon as you disagree with the first. That being said, If you want to know your legal options, get an attorney.

Well if you were an American you would have already got a second opinion (and paid for it) but instead you played an active part in the problem by taking the advice you knew was wrong. If the doctor is treating you bad he is trying to make you go away because he was wrong by not being thorough. You may have a case even though your partially to blame if you have TORT liability laws.

Herpes zoster (Shingles) is infection that results when varicella-zoster virus reactivates from its latent state in a posterior dorsal root ganglion. Symptoms usually begin with pain along the affected dermatome, followed in 2 to 3 days by a vesicular eruption that is usually diagnostic. Treatment is antiviral drugs and possibly corticosteroids given within 72 h after skin lesions appear.(Merck)
It is not known why your doctor did not administer anti-viral treatment within 72 hrs as stated above. Please note that Aciclovir (not Acilovir) was seen as the start of a new era in antiviral therapy, as it is extremely selective and low in cytotoxicity. Pharmacologist Gertrude B. Elion was awarded the 1988 Nobel Prize in Medicine partly for the development of aciclovir.
But in some cases, Herpes zoster usually disappears on its own, and may not require treatment except for symptom relief, such as pain medication (MedlinePlus). In certain other cases, there is neuro-muscular involvement as a complication to Herpes Zoster. You have not stated what medicines your doctor had prescribed 8 years ago.
I am not a medical professional and hence I am not competent to offer comments in your case.
Please see the web pages for more details on Herpes Zoster (Shingles) and Neuromyotonia.

It's your responsibility to get a second opinion if you are unhappy w/ the diagnosis. The fact that you asked for medication doesn't mean that he has to give them to you, where did you get your PHD from? Your doctor is a person, so by nature we all make mistakes, I'm sorry it happened to you. But ruining a persons life and reputation by filing a frivalous law suite is not the answer. Especialy when it is just as much your fault for not getting a second opinion.

i have to agree, may not be whatyou want to hear, but we are commanded by God not to go against someone at law. we are to suffer ourselves to be defrauded. that being said it is poeple like you that make everything so expensive for the rest of us. lawsuits make it difficult for doctors to get malpractice insurance, which makes them have to pay more, which makes them have to charge more, which makes our insurance copays and monthly go up, it is such a terrible thing, i just saw another lady on here saying her children didn't have health insurance because it would cost her 500 a month to insure them and she made just above the state requirement to be allowed help by them. what a pity, indeed. you really should have gone for the second opinion in the firstr place, i am sorry what happened to you but ultimately YOU are responsible for your own body, no one else, and doctors are human too
