You are correct!! He is going to get hurt doing this. Not immediately but over time all of that sliding and skidding will harm his joints.
Set up a barrier, I would just grab my dining room chair and lay it on it's side in the way. This will correct this particular situation pronto! Or of course the popular baby gate will work.
But he still needs to burn off his energy. Try teaching him to fetch anything. So that you can toss it and he can run for it. This is the lazy Wo/mans way to get them some exersice while you are reading the mail and doing what else that you need to do.
Then take some time out everyday to play with him doing anything he really likes. I have one that loves fetch beyond all!! The other thinks fetch is for fools, but loves to "kill" stuffed animals, so he and I play tug and toss with those.
Many dogs will run "laps" anywhere they can, something about the circular motion that's cool for them. So see if you can encourage him to run laps outside or just in the carpeted areas.

I have a beagle puppy that just goes crazy. And it's not easy to take her for walks every hour. Plus I just can't let her go. Her nose will get her in big trouble. You didn't say if you have any kind of yard. But what we did is put up a cable run, 50 foot. then hook up a cable on that with a slider and hook it up to her collor. Gives her plenty of room to run and burn of energy. You just can't have anything that would get her hung up on or wrapped around. You still need to walk him but this gives him more time to get out.

Try taking it for a walk or letting it out in the back yard to do some running around. It appears that it wants to get some exercise.

Sounds like he has excess energy to burn. Take him outside for a long walk/jog. Go to the park and play fetch. If you don't have the time to spend, hire a dog walker and have him walk the dog multiple times throughout the day.

How about obedience training and holding long down stays? Put a prong collar on him and let him drag a short leash in the house, when he starts, grab the leash and give the APPROPRIATE correction.

The dog obviously needs to burn off his energy - Take him to the dog park and let him run to his hearts content, when he gets home, all he'll want to do is sleep!

use a baby gate to break his running pattern. dogs especially learn by repetition. just block the rout he takes and sometimes it helps to use a leash inside the house. that way you can control him. it takes time to break a habit. good luck.

HI
Exercise him on the leash and when he does this behavior put the leash on him and make him sit it sounds like anxiety the leash is your best way of controlling him.

Take him outside and exercise him! Start jogging with him EVERY DAY. Take him to a dog park where he can run to his heart's content.
You really had to ask?
