Food can be an addiction, something to do when one's bored, or just a comfort if they're under stress. Sometimes overweight people think that they'll never be thin again so why bother trying to lose weight and they just eat more to "comfort" themselves. They're just making it harder for themselves, though, and then when they want to lose weight, they've gained even more from before and the cycle starts anew.
Sometimes people are just born into a certain disease or health problem that causes them to become overweight as they get older (diabetes is one of those).
Sometimes it's hereditary (runs in their family) or it come from the kind of food that they were fed as babies and growing children.
So you see, they can't always help it. You shouldn't be so judgemental of other people (examine thine own plank!)

I feel your question is insensitive to people who have problems with weight whether due to metabolism, medication or they could have a medical problem. Not all overweight people are that way because they can't control what they eat. I am a nurse.
