A 1.6 diesel Astra would be your best bet.
low running cost, and cheap to run, and parts are easy to come by.

£6k will get you a lot of car if you shop around. My choice would be a used BMW 3 series. Avoid the alfa suggestion, great drivers car but break down more often than not. Newer vauxhalls have reliability issues. Ford focus is nice as are the toyotas you suggested.

I`d go for an Alpha Romeo 156. Group 11 insurance & 40mpg. Plus its the most beautiful saloon car ever made! Safe & reliable with good build quality.

You will never fail to smile every time get out of it. Real drivers car with Italian charisma by the bucket load.
Fabulous value for money second-hand..not so good new though..£6000 will buy you a 2003 upwards with full service history.. go on you know you want one.

you should get a mind-blowing handle 5-6k on civic or corolla. i could in my opinion choose for civics with the aid of fact honda are simplier to repair. additionally civics is between the main easiest autos to swap. the two civic and corolla do good on gasoline mileage. and im confident that civic aspects are greater reasonably priced in case nething is harm while in comparison with toyota.

Toyota win the reliability stakes every time but I don't like them!

Have a look at the sites below for whats on the market, and reviews on the cars....

Especially whatcar.co.m as it will give you a breakdown on the insurance group, reviews, safety reviews etc...

It doesn't look at just new cars, you can look at a range of older cars and compare up to three of them, looking at safety, reliability, space, road handling etc...

Hope it helps!x
