When viewed straight on, a flat top has "corners" whereas a a crew cut is much more rounded.

Crew cut is very short whereas flattop still has a thicker layer of hair. Crew cut screams army or rough person whereas flat top is very outdated these days. However, looks good if you spike it up with gel.

Both depend on you hair type.
If you can get a flat top a barber will tell you a crew cut as well.
This is the one time I suggest a barber they do this the best.

They're variations of the same shape in the design line. Yet, a crew cut is generally a much shorter version of the same..........

A flat top tends to be shorter on the sides..it is also ...flat on top!
