I call fried potatoes, fried potatoes and french fries french fries. I distinguish between the 2 as such. I cook fried potatoes in a skillet with a small bit of veg. oil and some onion, seasonings, french fries I cook in a pan of veg. oil or in the oven

They began as fried potatos cut in the French style, or Frenched fried. Today we call this julienned.

Thye are called "Freedom Fries" now in America.I call them papas fritas though.
